PPE Question

During a PPE, has anyone ever had a vet hold a closed plastic bag closed around/over a horses nose and mouth for 1-2 minutes?

Not during a PPE, but they did this to my pony very recently to check his breathing under stress.

I’ve done it. It raises blood CO2 levels and stimulates the horse to take a deep breath, which facilitates auscultation of the respiratory system.
I sometimes do it using a rectal sleeve, which makes the horse look a bit like an elephant, and delights children in the immediate vicinity.

Yes. My vet always does this to force the horse to take a deep breath.

asking for a friend ()… but what is “auscultation of the respiratory system” and why would one want to facilitate it?

Listening to the lungs and wouldn’t you want to be aware of any abnormalities?

Yes.

:ok_hand: thanks! Realizing I could have googled, but appreciate the info :slightly_smiling_face:
