PPE vet north of Jarrettsville/BelAir MD

I’m south of Baltimore so it’s a bit too far for my vet to travel…
Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

Manor Equine (Dr. Juzwiak/ www.manorequine.com)

THANK YOU!!!

THANK YOU!!! :D[/QUOTE]

Dr. Juzwiak is a good surgeon but he wouldn’t be on my list to do a PPE.

I use;

Dr. Bill Hess who moved to Maryland from Lexington KY. If you are getting ex-rays done the best value is to ask for “sales x-rays” covers the whole horse 34 views for around $650. If you go “piece meal” most vets will charge per view, usually around $35-50+. So if you only get 8-10 views it’s not much less than getting “soup to nuts” all in one price. Dr. Hess works with racehorses, sport horses, fox hunters etc. Only have Bill’s cell phone number 717 881-9996. This is a Lancaster Pa number but I know he does a lot of work down in the area.

I also use Dr. Rachel Westerlund who is with the Maryland Equine Center in Sparks. Glencoe “around the block” from Jarrettsville in “country mileage”. Dr. Westerlund is well known in the area. She is the attending vet and pre-race vet for the local Steeplechase races also. 441-771-4800

Both are great vets to work with. Have used them for a long time.

gumtree, thank you as well. In my experience it can be hard to schedule in a timely way so I appreciate options.
The foxhunter part is the most relevant for our needs, although the horse won’t be hunting. He’s that type and will do hunter paces and so on.

I’m in Jarrettsville and I use Liz Klebe–she’s part of Cooper Williams’s practice, but works out of Monkton. Good luck!!

Thanks - Dr Hess is sellers’s vet so no luck there. I’ve had lots of votes for Dr Klebe and her partner but wasn’t sure they went that far. This place is a bit north of you but not too far so hopefully…

Depending on where north you could contact Unionville Equine in Oxford, PA and see if they travel that far. Or PM Judyredpony (mmm…I can’t remember her exact user name). She is not too far from there (Conowingo) and sells a lot of horses.

Kc, I’ve used Unionville before for a PPE and been very happy but I think they are too far. Making some calls this am and hopefully will get it sorted. COTH is such a great resource!

Big NO on Dr Hess…can share privately…Dr J. Agree super surgeon. Not so much for PPE…can share privately…Unionville Equine highly recommend…excellant equipment, some of the Vets ride and event…excellant sports horse diagnosticians who deal with eventing community…My farm Vet Dr. Carolyn Littel…but I know she is in VT thru Monday…Also Dr Maria Lewis while best know as an Ultrasound Specialit to the the ***** she is an excellent choice for PPE.

Thanks jbrp! I will call unionville if my closer leads don’t pan out as I agree they are terrific. Thanks for the other two as well. NO worries on Dr Hess - he is seller’s vet anyway so is off the list.

You know, I rarely throw any vets under the bus. It’s not an exact science. I appreciate vets that understand this. Fire or do not use ones that don’t.

Don’t know what your “beef” is with Dr. Hess, don’t care. I can tell you this he picked up on somethings that other well-known vet didn’t and they cost me a lot of money. I “do” horses for a living. Flat racing, jump racing, sport, fox hunting etc.

Dr. Hess is held in very high regard by many “names” in the area and Kentucky. He “apprenticed” under a couple of the best in the business. Something VERY few vets can say. He pre-vets all of our sales yearlings. Horses that hopefully will be worth far more than the majority of horses being bought and or sold by people on this forum. He is a straight shooter, tells me what I need to hear not what I want to hear.

I won’t name, names like you have in a public forum. We used to use Unionville Equine, it was a very large account for them. They and I use “they” because I won’t name the individual vet but the “practice” didn’t do the right thing after the fact. A screw up on one horse cost me over $70,000, screw up on another has cost me many, many thousands, screw up on several others cost me a MAJOR client and friend.

If someone were to ask me about using Unionville, I would say yes with a “persona caveat” and who to use and who I would not.

If someone were to have a horse vetted in the Unionville area where I live. First choice hands down would be Dr. Kevin Keane. Dr. Keane is top armature Event rider and is the “go to vet” for people purchasing at the top of the market. Dr. Keane is extremely fair in what he charges.

A close second if not on par with Dr. Keane is Dr. Elizabeth Davidson the go to Sports vet at New Bolton. She is extremely thorough. I have used her to figure out WTF was wrong with a horses that others couldn’t figure out. New Bolton has a great indoor to work with so the horse can be ridden in a proper environment and evaluated on “even terms”. She has access to state of the art diagnostics on the grounds if needed. Not in another state or clinic. She is also a Hunter/Jumper rider.

I have used Cooper-Williams and most likely would again. But they screwed up on a horse last year that cost me many dollars and additional down time. But at least they apologies. Something Unionville did not do. Let alone work out compensation.

What ever happened between you and Dr. Hess was unfortunate. But I don’t think it is fair and balance to throw him under the bus in a public forum without hearing his side of the story. I will be seeing him in the near future and bring this up.

I have had my “problems” with others named on this “tread”. Gave brief details but did not throw them under the bus. I just wanted to point out that just about EVERY vet and or clinic will have “disgruntled” client. With a horse population of 30-50+ at times, all shapes and sizes I’ve pretty much seen it all.

I have used Manor Equine. I am not sure he would be my “go to” surgeon because I have access to those with better “credentials” and more state of the art facilities. But for a “local” clinic I certainly would have no reservations sending someone there. I did find what he charged for certain things to be outrageous and I told him so. He started his practice out of my brother in-law’s farm down the road before moving to where he is now. So we “go back” a few years. Nice enough guy to deal with just don’t like being nickeled and dimed.

I am from Monkton proud to say I am a member of one of the “founding families” of the area.

I am not trying to be “snarky” just feel people should be fair and balanced. Anybody that “does” horse for a long time will have a falling out with lots of different people at some point. Nature of the beast. Most “make up” at some point.

I understand why buyers take “issue” using the seller’s vet. I don’t because some of the “best” are used by lots of people.

No self respecting Vet worth using is going to “jeopardize” their reputation “fudging” or being biased on PPE.

Though some maybe most would rather not be put in the position. Kind of a “no win”.

When I have run into this as a buyer I tell the seller i have no problem using the same Vet if they and the Vet don’t.

I am not “pushing” for Dr. Hess just saying how i feel about these things.

Larry I did not throw anyone under a “Bus” and did attempt a PM to you…
Obviously you felt very strong about throwing under the “Bus” and sharing on the practices you no longer have a relationship with.
I have lost a Few expensive horses to a practitioner and not only did I not name them but have no intention of public ally or privately…The OP asked I wasn t randomly volunteering…No one is perfect and if you ask 3 vets watching from 3 different angles you may well get 3 different answers…some none or all the one you want to hear…LOL

I have used Rachel Westerlund before and had very good experiences. Her interpretation of radiographs and horseman’s intuition was borne out by the test of time.

No vet is perfect. I also had a vet at UEA misdiagnose a horse, but this vet (not my personal vet there) has an excellent reputation and is much loved by some of my friends (and very well-respected by New Bolton). I was looking for a vet near Frederick and got some names off this forum. When I told the seller who I was considering, she said she wouldn’t let that vet near her horses! (And I don’t think it was because she thought he would find something she was trying to hide). I agree Dr. Davidson is very good, but she and Dean Richardson working together couldn’t diagnose my horse’s lameness, which in the end turned out to be something fairly obvious. But Larry I am sorry for your experiences; that really sucks! And I agree there are vets at UEA that I don’t use (although most of them are no longer there).

Dr Teresa Martinoli has moved back into the area, I don’t have her number yet but I believe she is located at Flying Aces on RT 1. There is a new vet in the area who has done racetrack work for the past 7 years and is now doing farm work with a specialty in lameness but her card is at home so I don’t have access to her info until Friday. I met her this past weekend and was impressed with her credentials so if nothing else we have a good second opinion vet now.

I am from that area and several vets mentioned on the page you DO NOT want to use for PPE. (read PPE here, not saying some aren’t great for other things… willing to share my experiences in a PM. I do a lot of selling/buying for myself and clients)

The best in the area is Dr. Cooper Williams or Dr. Liz Klebe. They are the best for a reason. Expensive but will be upfront and honest and do a GREAT job.

sorry this thread has caused discord; it was certainly not intended to. I have a PPE set up for tomorrow with a vet recommended via several folks from COTH and also a very experienced horseperson who I know in real life

Gumtree, I have used seller’s vet in past but only if I have myself a relationship with vet. Feel in most instances there are other good vets besides the seller’s and it is simpler all around to keep the lines clear of potential obligation or discomfort.

Good luck with your PPE!
