Prascend side effect - being too warm

Has anyone had a horse not handle heat as well once they started on prascend?

My horse starts breathing faster during turnout even though it is only 74*. It is sunny but there is a very nice breeze. He seems to only last an hour before he is too warm and insists on coming inside.

He’s never really liked warm weather before but this seems to have worsen since starting prascend.

Maybe have your vet check blood to see if he needs thyroid medication added to Prascend?

My pony is having problems too but I don’t know if it is the Prascend, the Cushings, or his heavy winter coat when it is still 90 here. It was mid 80’s today but extremely humid and he was breathing hard at noon so I hosed him down and brought him inside to his fan. But my other mare was hot too. Pony doesn’t sweat well these days.

Difficulty self regulating temperature is one of the symptoms of PPID.

The odd change I noticed in my horse was that he became vastly more attractive to the blackfly/gnat/midge/no-see-ums type of insect than he had been prior to Prascend. Which may be coincidence.

After starting Prascend, one of my horses developed anhidrosis. Based on your description, it’s worth having your vet check as it could lead to heat stroke. My guy can no longer tolerate anything above 82 degree (real feel temp). Needless to say, he lives indoors during the summer months and only goes out late at night.

Yes. My old man and his buddy both have Cushings. Neither of them can handle the heat well. My guy has a really hard time regulating his body temperature in extreme heat or cold, but I’ve only noticed the other one having an issue with the heat. They’re both on Prascend, but I don’t know if it’s Cushings or Prascend related (I always assumed Cushings).

Cushing’s horse and Prascend here…mine has trouble in the heat but loves the cold. My vet said it’s the Cushings.

Yes, mine has issues with heat. Even with Prascend, cyproheptadine and thyroid meds, he still grows a thick coat too. I’ve body clipped him 4 times this year

Thanks, everyone!

My horse that has been on Prascend for several years became unable to handle the heat this year. He was also not sweating as much as he had been in earlier years. The vet recommended OneAC, which helped him sweat more. He did begin to sweat more and is fine now that the weather has cooled off. I agree with the other posters that the issue is more likely te Cushings than the Prascend.
