Broodmare is approaching the time when pre foaling vaccines are imminent. We are trying to devise a plan & I’m wondering what others may do with their mares who may need a modified vaccine schedule due to a history of vaccine reactions. Normally we would do “one” at a time (Rabies, EWT, WN), 4 weeks in between each. Well that’s not going to work, though I imagine at this point she has quite a high rabies titre so perhaps we can do that one first? Vet is out next week so we will discuss then, in the meantime I thought I would check in here. WNV & EEE are the biggest concerns in our area, they are prevalent. Foal “due” 7/7.
Start vaccinating now then. You don’t HAVE to wait for Day 310. Rabies first - it’s too deadly to mess around with. Tetanus is crucial too but typically doesn’t cause issues so that can go with anything. EEE is the worst of the enceph viruses, WNV the “best”. WEE is much less common than EEE, but it still pretty deadly.
Yes EEE & WNV the biggest concern as far as diseases, we live across from a body of water & they are found in our town & surrounding towns every year.
My thought was do the rabies now as well because that is lleast likely to cause a problem reaction wise & she should have a high rabies titre anyways at this point in her life.
