Pregnant mare with ulcers.

Need suggestions on treating a mare 6 months in foal that we are pretty sure has ulcers.
Mare has had ulcers a few times in the past and was treated with ompromazole but since it is not approved for pregnant horses we are looking for other suggestions.

Aloe vera juice? A lot of people have had success treating ulcers with aloe vera, I am not sure whether this is OK for pregnant mares however the vet should be able to advise.

This might be the one time I would scope to make sure she really does have ulcers and if so I might risk the gastrogard. It hasn’t been tested in pregnant mare so there is no data either way which is why they say not to use it. If you don’t want to do that then maybe ranitidine 3 times per day is worth a shot.

Hi Jump Pony,

I work for Nutrena and Progressive, and am also dealing with this issue, I just called one of our Equine Specialists, and both Progressive Nutrition Soothing Pink products are safe for pregnant mares. I’ll be putting my mare on the Soothing Pink XTRA Strength product, as he said dose for dose it is a little more economical. Feel free to send me a PM if you want additional information!

Good luck with your girl!
