So here in Illinois we have had a wet spring & summer. The flies and mosquitoes are HORRIBLE! We use the fly predators and increased our allotment but still it’s miserable! So today I bought a 1 gallon tank sprayer, a large bottle of lemon pine sol and a gallon of white vinegar. Mixed it up 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 water and sprayed the interior of each stall - NO FLIES! I also sprayed it right on a group of flies that were congregating on some grain & beet pulp “soup” dropped by the 32 yr old toothless wonder - they fell dead! I swept them up with the spilt grain and tossed them out!

So does the Pine-sol have to be lemon or will any “flavor” do? I’m assuming it must be real Pine-sol and not a generic.

I’ve mixed Pinesol, white vinegar, and SSS, 1/3 each, then a little citronella, as fly spray for years after my old farrier swore by it.

Every once and a while I try the chemical fly spray, and it’s not 1/2 as good as my mix.

I ran out of vinegar and the barn and used only SSS for the past 2 days. Smells great and works well for the horses.

Never thought about a big sprayer. I am SO doing that. The flies are horrible thanks to the monsoon rains.

I’ll have to try it. Twice a year I wash my barn and run-in down with pinesol and weekly I scrub my cement aisle with it. It really makes the barn fresh.

For those who use this on their animals…is the pinesol harsh on their coats? Is it safe to use on animals?

I’m also in Illinois and the flies/mosquitoes have been horrid this year. Too much rain! They seem to have become practically immune to every brand/kind of fly spray I bring home. I’m willing to try anything at this point, just to keep my ponies comfortable, but not if it’s more harsh on them/their coats than a commercial spray.

I mix pine sol and white vinegar and spray the barn floor and stall walls every morning after I clean stalls. It smells good and I do think he helps with flies.

I was just reading about a Pine Sol fly repellent mixture on another board, and someone listed the ingredients of Pine Sol (note: this is the original Pine Sol):

1.Pine Oil (very common ingredient in a lot of “natural” fly sprays plus is a natural medicinal)
2.Sodium Salt
3.Isopropyl Alcohol (very common ingredient in most sprays)

And the “recipe” that was posted:

Pine Sol (ORIGINAL style only)
Apple cider vinegar
water
squirt of dish soap to keep it together.[/B]

I’m going to try it as soon as I get some Pine Sol. I’m also going to add a small amount of neem oil (2 teaspoons per 32 oz of mix) since I have it on hand and have used it other homemade flyspray concoctions with good results.

I’ll fess up, ever since a breeder I respect highly told me about it, I’ve been using Pine Sol as a base for bug stuff.

This past batch, I got a wonderful bottle of bath oil for ‘colds’ that has menthol and wintergreen oils… I put in Pine Sol, Vinegar, some SSS and some of the bath oil.

Beautiful coats–does attract dust, and obviously test for sensitivity–and IMMEDIATE relief.

The SSS can burn some horses. I’m careful with it because it’s an oily mix on pink skin. But… it works. And I might be wrong, but I can’t believe Pine Sol is more toxic than some of the other stuff we use… :uhoh:

I am VERY sensitive to soap, detergent, jewelry, creams/lotions etc. and break out in hives… I have gotten this mixture on me, and even USED it on me, and never had a problem. Again–that is merely anecdotal, but good enough for ME.

I do clean my barn with Pine Sol, never thought to use it on the horses though.
I have used white vinegar for ages though…not as spray on the horses (although I do use it as a rinse after they get hosed down) but as a spray for the barn. I spray the aisle mats and around the doors and windows daily in bug weather. Keeps flies out of my barn. I also keep a spray bottle of white vinegar hanging on the wheelbarrow. Whenever I dump the wheelbarrow I use the spray bottle to spray what I just dumped. Fly eggs and larvae can’t survive. :winkgrin: I’ve never had flies in my manure pile.
I’ll have to try the Pine Sol and vinegar mixed in a spray bottle for the barn though. I like the smell of a clean pine sol-ed area.

I use a mixture of Flicks concentrate and apple cider vinegar as a fly spray. Seems effective for a few minutes, which is about as long as any of them last. I use it as an extra layer when I’m riding. My horse and I both hate the smell though… been thinking of adding SSS to the mixture, maybe I’ll throw in some regular vinegar and some Pine Sol too… should be lethal, one way or another!

I’ve been trying the spray-your-lawn-with-Listerine thing for mosquitoes, but not sure if it’s working. Seems to really piss off the mosquitoes though when I spray them.

At my last barn, we had a big jug of pine oil with a pump. You would squirt a little in a watering can, fill it with water, and sprinkle the whole barn floor with it before sweeping.

FYI, our horse who has allergies to chemical fly sprays does great with the mix, and so far, great with straight SSS, too

I love the smell of original pine sol! Not sure about adding vinegar, but I don’t need much encouragement to start spraying pine sol around the barn. :yes: Flies aren’t that bad, but maybe worth a try outside where they hang out in the shade. Thanks for the tip!

Any idea what these mixtures would do to fly predators? Know you’re not supposed
to use regular fly sprays around them so when I do spray the horses, I take them away
from the barn to do it.

Hmmm…thanks for the replies! I’d never even considered using pinesol on my horses…as I use it to clean my floors!

But, I’m going to mix up a small batch to night and do a “test run” on my ponies. If it keeps the flies away and doesn’t cause any adverse reactions, we’ll keep on using it!

I’m thinking the pinesol/vinegar concoction may also be a great spray for the chicken house as well! I’m sick of getting those damned fly strips caught in my hair, and if the pinesol/vinegar works to keep my hens fly-free, I can get rid of those strips FOREVER.

I am planning major barn painting/cleaning this weekend. I think I’ll do the pinesol in the tack room only for now. Do you think it’ll kill spiders, I’m so freakin over them this year!

and it says not recommended for wood surfaces incase some are thinking of spraying wood.
