Prenatal care question

I’m not a breeder, in fact, lifelong owner of geldings :smirk:
But I’m curious:
Friend bought a mini mare last Fall w/3mo filly at her side, supposed to be bred back for a foal this month.
Due date - June 2 - came & went.
From my skimming threads here, I told friend No Worry.
I saw mare last week of May.
While she had a belly, I saw zero movement & it didn’t seem like belly was dropped as I’d seen in other near-foaling mares.
Friend had an out-of-town trip last week & took mare to her vet’s.
Came back to no foal & vet telling her no pregnancy, just FAT
AFAIK, vet had not seen mare for months before.
While I realize mare could have slipped/reabsorbed the foal, should there have been more vet involvement (especially as friend - like me - has zero breeding experience)?
Don’t know if vet even palpated or otherwise tested for pregnancy when she first got the mare.
Am I overthinking?

Overthinking. Mare likely never “caught” and sellers were saying what they thought buyers wanted to hear. Lots of low end mares drop “surprise” foals for new owners, lots of mares don’t conceive promptly even with pasture breeding.

There are certain things that should definitely be done (15 and 30 day pregnacy checks to eliminate twins, vaccines, and carefully avoiding fescue in the last 3 months)-- but it sounds like the mare may never have been pregnant or may have slipped early on. If there weren’t any visible issues, most likely there was nothing that could have been done anyway. Sometimes it just happens.

I have bred some mares in the past and I didn’t do much different than normal care just like any other horse.

  1. I did adjust the feed in the last 3 months to allow for the nutritional needs of a growing foal.

  2. She was give the recommended vaccines @ 5, 7, 9 months ( i think that was it-has been a long time)

  3. I had them vet checked for pregnancy several times to ensure they were still in foal.

I do think your friend should have had the mare checked after she was purchased. People can fake just about anything now. Was she given a copy of the the vet records showing the positive result ( via ultrasound i assume ) ?
