I am very interested in making the 4 hour trek to participate in one of these shows this year with my yearling - maybe my coming two year old pony geldin just for exposure- but I am curious how do you all prepare for these? Mainly the jump chute. What is the best and most correct way to teach them the chute? How high are yearlings expected to jump at the shows? I’ve seen some photos of horses not braided … Is braiding required? (Obviously I would as I feel it would be a great photo opportunity and its a more professional presentation of the horses… Yet are dressage braids acceptable?). I’m in essence looking for 1) more information on the shows and 2) curious how everyone finds it best to prepare youngsters to show their full potential (as an inexperience youngster in a jump chute is not going to show their best technique yet how do you ensure you don’t do too much?)
There is no need to prepare your youngster for the jump chute as there is a schooling jump chute class in which the yearlings are jumped VERY low- too low for our taste, but there you have it!
Braiding is not required but strongly encouraged–the judges can better see the shape of the neck and the horses will look just that much better to the public and in their photos.
I believe that yearlings are only allowed to show in hand, not through the jump chute.
There is a jump chute schooling class for ALL ages- Yearlings through Four–that is just that, giving an opportunity for all to school through the chute without the presence of a judge and not scored. Handlers will put the horses through the chute in what perhaps might better be termed a schooling “session” rather than class.
Should have been more specific…you’re right, there isn’t a judged class. Just the ability to do minimal schooling under the training of knowledgable people.
So there is a schooling chute and a class? As I’ve seen information about horses getting jumping scores?

Four yr. olds have schooling jump chute, jump chute, in hand, under saddle and jumping classes. Five yr. olds have under saddle and jumping classes.

2yo’s have a schooling and also judged jump chute class.
