Prescriptions for horse trailer

i am putting together prescriptions for my horse trailer for trips and cant find any dex in powder form which is how im used to giving it - all i can find is IV… is that how it’s usually given?

The liquid form of Dex is administered via IM - not IV.

I usually use the Dex tablets. They fit well in a Dimple pill pocket cookie so they can easily be administered that way on the road.

I think you can give the injectable Dex orally as well

Dexamethasone injectable can be given either IM or IV. I have used it by both routes for my RAO horse; the IV route for more rapid effect in really severe bouts of RAO.

For my human patients it was always administered intravenously.

BTW, dexamethasone can be ordered without an Rx from Canada, but not bute. I found that strange. When dealing with my RAO horse, I could order a case of dexamethasone from Canada for less than a single bottle cost by Rx in the US.

Dex tablets are super small and would be easy to give in a treat if you don’t want to deal with injectable.

Our mare with allergies gets injectable Dex orally when she needs it.
