What a nice horse
If you don’t say “ooooh” or something, this doesn’t bump up, and a bunch of people miss seeing a really nice horse.
Maybe I’m missing something… The horse itself is pretty, but it is flinging its toes around while the back end seems to come along because it is attached, and without actually tracking up.
Draftmare is being hyper critical but I think he is a very nice horse. Don’t know how else to describe it but I like the appearance of lightness.
In “big moving” horses, especially where there is much freedom of the shoulder, it can sometimes be misleading whether or not a horse tracks up. They cover so much ground without looking like they’re going fast, that sometimes it looks like the hinds are falling short.
This horse is tracking up in almost all the movements. Some movements, she is overtracking. I will say I did see a spot in the corner in medium where there was not 100% tracking 100% of the time. It helps if you slow down the video.
IMHO the mare killed it at the half-passes. I really liked the clarity between movements; that is what I would have called a crisp change from medium to extended back to medium again, without loss or change in rhythm or energy. Tremendous amount of suspension and carry in the passage, I don’t see a lot of horses track up or overtrack like ever in that movement. Good walk with tons of overtrack in freewalk. The horse’s nose is in front of the vertical for the majority of the test, and I can see why the judges rewarded them well, they put in a lovely test.
There are plenty of instances where a horse flings its toes and is flailing behind with its hocks but I don’t think this is one of them. There were some flaws with this test as there is with any, but I don’t quite agree that there was nothing special with the test.
I appreciated how the rider let the horse move his head and had a giving hand. Lovely test
That is what I thought as well. So light and springy? I don’t think that is the word, but man that horse looks fun to ride!
I noticed the utter quietness and solidity (is that a word?) of the rider before I allowed myself to drool over his movement. It’s more than a gorgeous horse and a well ridden test - it’s the very picture of harmony between horse and rider. We should all strive to obtain that, even if only once in a while! Thanks for posting!
thanks for posting!!
Does tracking up no longer refer to the working gaits?
Tracking up is for working gaits (and medium and extended gaits). I’m not sure everyone realized that most of this work is collected - and at that point, tracking up is not the standard. The gaits become shorter and rounder - the energy goes UP instead of forward. This is a super lovely horse, and very well ridden!
In medium and extended gaits, there is over-stride, and it can be hard to recognize because there is also so much air time in this horse’s gaits. But if you look at where the feet are landing in the medium and extended gaits, there is over stride. Just a lot of air in between!
Beautifully done.
Exactly - overtrack is in what - 5 or 6 movements? Out of 36 movements? Tracking up is not the standard for collected work!
I thought this was going to be a zorse or something from seeing zibrasport in the thread preview and the subject “Pretty”. I’m so glad I opened and watched - lovely!
I follow this pair on instagram and she is a lovely rider and the clips posted are always harmonious.
People often mix up tracking up and engagement of the hind legs.
It’s an easy, and the first, reference for someone who doesn’t see/feel yet subtle differences between a horse who’s working through properly and one that is not.
We’ve all been told by our trainers : If your horse is not tracking up, it’s not engaged enough.
Up until riders work on collected movements.
Is there another source for this video for those of us who refuse to Facebook?
I can’t find current videos of the Grand Prix Special, but here are some of her Grand Prix and Kur rides.
