Preventic Tick Collar

One of my dogs has developed a sensitivity to fles/tick spot medication. I called my vet today looking for a flea/tick pill preventative and they recommended Trifexis for Fleas and heartworms and Preventic Tick collar for tick control. Has anyone used this collar? I am a bit nervous because one of my previous dogs got lyme disease many years ago.

Any reviews/feedback or other ideas would be great!

I use them on my dogs because one dog is very sensitive to the spot treatment. They work…but if the dog gets wet, the dog is left unprotected for at least 24 hours.

LOVE IT!!

We had terrible ticks the last few years (the exception being last year when we had the drought) and no amout of perscription spot tick treatment would work. Then I found preventic collars at the vet and used it WITH the spot treatments and it worked wonders. I still found a few on them, but it was better than the 20+ per day I was pulling off them. (we have a farm and are surrounds by thick woods and tall grass)

We used both Frontline and a Preventic collar back in tick infested Maryland. My cocker (who had neuro lyme and had a seizure disorder as a result) couldn’t wear the Preventic collar or use the Frontline Plus. Only the regular Frontline. We put in the Max Force Tick System and I sprayed the yard.

I asked my vet about it and he was not a fan and recommended against it. This is a vet that normally will sell you most anything that will get him a cut, so I took his suggestion and decided not to try it.

Did he say why?

Scalibor collar is also an option

I used the collar in conjunction with frontline for a couple years. The first year it helped quite a bit; the second year not so much, and the third year it did nothing. The ticks up here are immune to EVERYTHING. I’m trying Advantix this weekend but need to figure out how to keep the dogs away from the cat for a few hours.

FYI, you cannot use the Scalibor if you have cats.

Love the preventic collar. Our setters go out to do field trials each season. I take the collar off prior to the trial, then slap it back on right after they come in from the field. I have found that ticks may jump onto the dogs but will jump back off almost immediately.

We have not had to pull a tick out of any of our dogs since using them. That has been years and I live in a high infestation area for ticks.

Do not get them wet as mentioned. I have also found that they last much longer than the 3 months they suggest.

My vet has no problem with them and likes them better than directly laying chemicals onto the dogs skin.

I had good success with them last year and will be putting them on again this weekend for the spring season. My vet uses them and recommends them.
