Preventing sand colic?

The one area where we feed our horses is pretty worked down. Dirt is fine and sandy. We have a bathtub in there. I fork off hay from a round bale~

Should I just buy some rubber mats and put those down? I would use muck buckets but we have high winds? Not sure how I would secure those down? (Unless I use a mineral block in each?)

Does anyone feed sandrid? I’ve heard conflicting things either way.

Just curious what everyone else’s set up is.

My horses have hay bags and big rubber feeders underneath those (so most of the hay that falls out is collected). I’m in a high wind area so they’re fed in their shelters (with one wall facing the wind so the shelters are protected). They are also fed psyllium, although I believe there is conflicting reports as to whether or not that works, I don’t believe there is any indication that it is harmful however.

try to keep the hay off the bare ground - mats with muck baskets are a good ides. You can secure the basket with a few bolts through the bottom and then through the mat - drill holes first.
The Univ of Fl did a study on various sand-clear type supplements. The outcome was that good quality HAY removed more sand than any of the products tested. http://media.news.health.ufl.edu/misc/largeanimal/Failure%20of%20Psyllium%20Mucilliod%20to%20Hasten%20Sand%20Evacuation%20from%20Equine%20LI%20VS%201998%20PH%20and%20DEF.pdf and https://ker.com/equinews/answer/equine-nutritionist-qa-sand-colic-horses/
