One quarter per day did not do it for my gelding. So vet upped it to one half and told me to give him a whole one the day before, day of and day after he gets trimmed as it is painful for him to have his legs flexed.
Just a follow up to False Impression’s post above Previcox IS legal for Vet’s to prescribe and dispense to horses in Canada. I asked my Vet just yesterday to confirm as one of my boarders horses is on that drug. Super simple, one little pill in the feed every day. Why can’t they make all horse medication this easy?
Previcox is for dogs. Pills are small and 57mg each.
Equioxx are the big horse pills and those you cut in 4.
Not correct. Previcox also comes in 227 mg. I have the 227mg Previcox for my older dog and for one horse-
Dog gets one half pill a day during rough times. When used for my horse- it is half what the dog gets- one quarter pill as directed by my vet.
Previcox is the dog version but is commonly used for horses as an off label use in some areas where Equioxx is not readily available. It is the same product except for the bacon flavoring.
Agree with poster who said this off label use will likely come to an end ($$$) if vets are pressured to not prescribe it.
I stand corrected for the big dog pills! Never used those personally.
Anyway, my mare still trotted sound today so I guess I really was worried for nothing. Damn rehab.
Thanks.
@Crockpot: bacon flavoring? LoL Never realised that, maybe it’s the reason why my old gelding doesn’t like it!!!

Equioxx is also more expensive and that is why most people get Previcox instead of Equioxx.
I disgress.
So I guess my “one shot deal” of previcox was like throwing a rock in the pound and that means my mare did not re-injured herself. Great! :)[/QUOTE]
Pervicoxx is for dogs.
the canine dose is larger than the quine dose. Previcox has not been cleared for equine use in any sized pill. It is "of label use.
The product , identical , Equioxx has been cleared for horses. However as it is more expensive horse people try very hard to use Previcox, but must be aware of dosage difference.
You dodged a bullet.
Merial claims they are not identical for the same reasons basically that they say their omeprazole is better than other’s. They claim that the paste Equioxx is the only treatment for horses in terms of efficacy, but it’s probably because of marketing and they didn’t test the dog version sufficiently on horses. Anyway, that is all part of the schpeal your vet is supposed to disclose to you when they recommend Previcox because Previcox is off label in horses.
Merial made a big deal, last fall maybe, of dropping the cost of Equioxx $1.00 per tube. So if it was $9.00 before it has plummeteded to 8.00 now. Previcox is about $0.65 - 0.75/day, depending on who you get it from. Merial also says it could be used for 2 weeks for arthritis in horses. Then what? You stop treating the horse? For how long? When can you start again?
I’ve never understood the concern about off label for a dog product when we talk all the time about things like human doxy pills for Lyme disease and omeprazole for ulcers. I get the Previcox from Valley Vet, and identify the species of my horse as equine. It is clearly printed on the Rx label. They don’t seem to have a problem filling the prescription.
BTW, my guy could care less about the bacon flavor. I have taught him to nibble the tiny pill out of my hand, after which I usually stuff a treat in there. I don’t like to drop it in grain because he’s a sloppy eater and I have no way of knowing if he really ate the pill.
I wondered about this as well as the USEF rules that allow up to 14 days of Equioxx. The research shows that steady state is achieved after 8 doses. So if you are showing on day 12, the amount of drug in the horse’s system is the same as if you were on day 8 or day 20. Right?
