My golden retriever is sore on his hind leg. I have 227 mg previcox that I give a quarter of to one of my horses. What would be the correct dosage for my golden? I read a few threads and it seems like half would be ok. Anyone have any first hand knowledge? Thanks!
Here is the package insert that states a dose of 2.27 mg/lb: http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AnimalVeterinary/Products/ApprovedAnimalDrugProducts/DrugLabels/UCM050403.pdf
The recommended dosage of PREVICOX (firocoxib) for oral administration in dogs is 2.27 mg/lb (5.0 mg/kg) body weight once daily as needed for osteoarthritis and for 3 days as needed for postoperative pain and inflammation associated with soft-tissue surgery. The dogs can be treated with PREVICOX approximately two hours prior to surgery. The tablets are scored and dosage should be calculated in half tablet increments. PREVICOX Chewable Tablets can be administered with or without food.
Still might want to at least chat with your vet about it, though. Curiously, my vet has not used Previcoxx at all past a couple dogs, both of which developed a raging case of gastric ulcers. He was happy to give me his samples for my horse!
Why would you not take the dog to the vet?
Simkie, thanks for the info. I gave Jackson half of the 227mg and he seems much, much better this evening.
LauraKY, if I felt my dog needed to see a vet I certainly would take him, thank-you.
