True. For maintenance I have gotten away with 12 X2/day for a 1200 lb horse
i already order it through entirely pets (my vets recommendation) and drive to Montana as it’s cheaper than Canada BUT it’s still about $50 can per tube so generic omeprazole it is for his daily dose! I save the expensive bank breaking stuff for multi week shows
Another option if you can get it in Canada is generic Nexium (esomeprazole). One study showed success with as little as 40mg per day for a 1,000lb horse. That was administered through a stomach tube so most people feed more but you can get esomeprazole in the U.S. at Walmart for around $15 for 42 20mg pills. Another study fed up to 1g per day so I think it’s pretty hard to overdose if you take a wag at the number of pills. The capsules are little and the horses just eat them with their feed.
I just started two horses on it and so far am seeing good results. Both horses were initially treated with UG. One is having a flare up a year later and the esomeprazole seems to be working well. The other just finished an initial 28 day UG regimen but when I tried to taper to 1/2 tube, he started showing symptoms again. I switched to esomeprazole and he also is responding well.
