Price of gastrogard increased

Has gastrogard incredsed in price? I was paying $50 I just realized my vet clinic is now changing $68 Canadian a tube. $75 for a single tube.

Can you buy from the US? FarmVet has them for $30 USD. Merrial has a $2.00 per tube rebate. Shipping is free in the US. Not sure about Canada.

Ulcergard is $28 with rebate.

Yikes, it’s been almost a year since I last ordered any gastroguard. My Vet charged me $40 per tube.
I just ordered some Nexium (delayed release Esomeprazole) from Amazon.ca to try. Going by the dosage on the thread on the HorseCare forum $150 got me enough to treat for a month and wean. It’s a drop in the bucket to try, especially if gastroguard is in fact $75 a tube now.

I’m in Canada too so I feel your pain. It’s harder and more expensive to get most animal drugs here.

Merial has upped the rebate to $5 (USD)/tube if you buy from a vet or pharmacy. We had a bit of a base price increase in the US as well, but $75 is crazy!

Rebate won’t work in Canada. I tried… Didn’t even get a “Sorry, you don’t qualify” email.
In fact, in Canada Merial no longer owns GG; Merial is now part of Boehringer Ingelheim.

This particular small vet clinic marks things up allot so that’s likely what this is. I was shocked when the secretary said $75. They are charging me $65 as I buy allot but it’s $68 with tax, ouch!

This was my experience too and my rebate was a couple of hundred dollars after a year of having to use the stuff… sob

when I now have to use actual GG instead of generic, I order from Entirely Pets always find a coupon and get them on sale and then they’ll send it to a PO Box in Montana … it’s totally worth the 3 hr drive!

Isn’t there a pharmacy in Canada that sells omeprazole paste that is same as Ulcergard but it has to be refrigerated? I thought it was Prerace.com and it came from Canada?

Yeah at this point considering the horse’s history and last scope findings, with those prices, I’d definitely ask to use a compounded paste or powder. A friend’s horse lives on omeprazole after several attempts to stop it, and so she uses a compounded powder. It seems to be good enough.

I just spent 1500 on 21 tubes of gastrogard. I think this will be the last time I plan on weaning and switching to dietary management or long term compounded if nessacary.

I use the liquid compounded from Summit . I get it from my vet and it’s $130 a bottle which at 10cc a day lasts almost 2 months

They got an FDA warning letter for marketing an unapproved drug…and it didn’t have the stated amount of omeprazole in it anyway. You get what you pay for.

https://www.fda.gov/iceci/enforcementactions/warningletters/2014/ucm421133.htm

In addition, testing by FDA of samples of the drug Omeprazole Oral Paste revealed that the amount of active ingredient (omeprazole) in the drug did not correspond with the amount represented on the labeling. Specifically, the drug was found to be sub-potent at 68.1% of the label claim for potency.

I’ve used the Summit version for a pre-show preventative. I have no idea if it is actually working or not, I just try to be proactive when doing potentially stressful activities (clinics, shows, etc). He doesn’t have signs of ulcers or get irritable, but I just feel bad reading about the number of horses with ulcers:sadsmile:. Anyone know if it has ever been tested to see quantity of drug actually in it?

.

No no idea if there’s any tests but I do know that my horse has stayed ulcer free and his pyloric region has not flared up again, so I’ll keep using the stuff  our vet is happy with it so that’s also good!

Several of my vets are recommending this product and say that some clients are reporting better success with this than with gastrogard. No script needed, not sure if they ship to Canada but it’s worth looking into.

Summit Vet Phamacy potency tests all equine products (and 95% small animal products) before they leave the door and there are stability studies done on many products as well (whether it be potency, sterility, endotoxin, particulate and even stability).

There is an in house lab with several chemists and several HPLC machines that test almost all products 24/7.

USP states potency range to be 90-110% in order to pass, but Summit uses a tighter range

It is an amazing compounding pharmacy…

Holy crap!!

I just use Ranitidine from Costco. Have you tried that instead of Omeprazole?

I chucked a couple months of blue pop rocks as I am no longer willing to use Omeprazole but they still exist don’t they?

@eclipse you could try Ulcerguard if you have to order. It’s the same as GG, but a LOT cheaper for some reason! And can get it through most retailers not a vet

The ranitidine dosage for a 1,000 lb horse is 20 150mg tablets three times a day. That’s a difficult schedule to maintain for most people.
