Pricing A Hunter

I’m not saying if I’m looking to purchase or sell said horse. However, I would like an idea of how much a horse like this would sell for:

10yo
16.3H
Oldenburg
Mare
Hunted 1st fight for two seasons several years ago
Used as show horse for past several years
Now hunting again
Fairly quiet (no rear/buck, but forward)
No known soundness issues

Depends quite a lot on the training / show level of the horse, talent (could it be a show horse instead of a hunt horse, or both? And at what level?)

Well, a lot comes down to how forward she is. If she is a fancy mover, fancy jumper, can do well at VHSA/smaller rated hunter shows (especially Hunt Night) in the 3’ divisions, and most people can easily ride her in the hunt field, and she passes a vet check, $25k +/- in today’s market.

The more forward she is, or the less good a mover/stylish jumper, etc, start knocking some of the price off. I sold a similar WB mare to yours, just 16.1 and a year older, with a good USEF record in the hunters and jumpers and had evented, with 3 seasons going first field, with NO soundness issue (perfectly clean vetting), for around $20k last year as she was a more forward, bold ride over fences and when hunting. Perfect for the guy who bought her, but not a super easy on-the-buckle-in-the-hunt-field ride that most want for the $20-30k price range.

You can price this horse at anything you want to, but remember the market is soft for horses between $5,000-$50,000 (so others here have said). I wonder how much of a market there is for $25,000 horses, also.

I would look at the various sites that sell specifically to foxhunters, and try to compare.

Another big factor in the price is location. A $25K hunt horse in one part of the country is a lot less in other parts.

Said horse is hunting with Northern VA hunts and does tend to be more of a forward moving horse. Sands at the checks, but gets strong at the gallop. Very easy to flat in the ring, more forward over fences in the ring, but not unsafe by any means. Has shown and done well in the local Hunters up through 3’ and is fancy enough to do Hunt night. No prep needed. Clean lead changes. NEVER stops. Usually pins in the hack and over fences.

I think sidesaddle’s post is spot on. I was actively shopping in late summer and was seeing those prices. (in VA)
