Pricing a used Western saddle

Not an ad- have an interested buyer, but not sure what to ask. Saddle was custom made in 1997 for my Percheron. It is oversized to look “normal” on a huge horse -longer skirts, longer strings, just over all bigger. Sadly, my lovely draft horse crossed the Rainbow Bridge in January. I know I will never have another draft horse. I have been using this saddle on my saddle horse, because it is so comfortable, but it doesn’t fit him well. Secondly, it is really heavy. It is all I can do to lift it up on my horse! Sometimes I use an English saddle just because it’s easier. I do have two other Western saddles that are lighter, but for (stupid) sentimental reasons, I keep riding in this one).

Ok, the question. Keeping in mind this saddle was originally $2K, but is 19 years old, has had lots of use (probably 20x a year, minimum), is black (not a fashionable color right now for the show ring) is large (16 inches) what would you ask for it? It isn’t the kind of saddle someone would buy for their 4-H kid, or a show. It’s a Dave Hulbert Saddle.

Saddle has a matching breast collar, flank strap, and bridle.

What do you think I should ask?

$800.00? It’s a very good looking saddle, and it looks well maintained. You might get more if you are willing to advertise and wait a bit for a buyer. Someone with a draft horse will be awfully glad to have it. I would think it is like selling an expensive horse property, you need the right person to come along, and the right person will not have a lot of similar options to chose from. That’s worth something.

  1. that’s nice!

You seem to be in an in-between area with this saddle from my experience.
But some of that may depend on the gullet, bar angle and skirt length.
I know a lot of people who ride drafts and draft crosses and this saddle may work for them since it has a usable horn for roping although the color and the rigging is not desirable in this neck of the woods.

I believe black saddles came back into style in the QH showring but if you are at that level you are not showing a draft(obviously) or a QH that is built like one. Again that would depend on the measurements.

It’s a nice looking saddle and well kept, in my opinion, I wouldn’t be afraid to throw out that $1400 price that jdobbs suggested and go from there. Try posting it to different sites targeting different types buyers and adjust accordingly depending on the responses you do or don’t get.

I was thinking $1200 from the right person. You might have to wait, but you might have to wait even if you price it lower. It’s a nice looking saddle.

I mostly agree with what has already been posted, around $800 to $1200. Just depends how “quickly” you wantt it to sell, or if you don’t mind if it takes a while.

Thank you for the replies. I have declined the original offer as it was considerably lower than what was suggested here. I plan to take some more measurements (and photographs of the measurements) and see what I can do marketing this saddle. Thank you for your replies!

Have you looked here for any comparable saddles?

That may give you an idea what others are asking for similar saddles.

Bluey --you are a genius! I did look up my saddle, after I read your post. Good grief --those saddles sell for w-a-a-y more than I was asking. I am in shock --had no idea it was worth that kind of money --well, seems to be anyway. Asking and getting are not generally the same thing when it comes to price.
