pro-add vs nutrena empower balance grass supplement

I have been feeding pro-add but my feed store ran out and gave me nutrena empower balance and said it was the same thing. I got it home and it isn’t the same thing. I have two horses that might be around 1000 lb. the older one is on the thin side and I fed him safechoice senior for the calories as well as the pro-add and then the 2 yr old I fed some triple crown growth as well as the pro-add again for the calories as well as hay of course.
I guess I would feed 1 lb of empower as opposed to a tiny provided measure cup of pro- add.
anyway - does anyone feed pro-add and fed empower and can compare the two to help me decide if I should NOT take my horses off pro-add or is it the same.
Sorry - just confused about the two balancers…thanks in advance if anyone can help me…

6 of one…

They aren’t THE same, but they are both ration/diet balancers, and while the quality of the Progressive is higher, the Nutrena is just fine

Feed the same amount of the Empower Balance as you were the Pro-Add. IIRC they are both roughly the same weight per volume.

But, how much of any ration balancer you SHOULD feed depends on how much of a regular grain you’re feeding. For the older thinner guy I don’t know why you’d add a RB, when he should likely be getting well more than the minimum recommended amount of the SC Sr.

RBs are not for calories. They are for nutrition. If you get stuck between needing an RB and a regular feed, only feeding, say, 3lb of a feed meant to be fed at minimally 6lb, then you’d add 1/2 a serving of a RB to that amount, so 1/2-1lb of an RB for most horses.

Feed for calories first, and if you’re having to cut down for easier keepers, switch entirely to a RB, or add it in a partial dose based on what % of the minimum feeding rate you’re using with the regular feed.
