Probably a silly question.. But wondering about registering my filly USEF

So I’m looking to get my filly life time registered this year before she turns “1” on January 1st. Do you have to be a member of USEF yourself to register your foal? I see it asks for a USEF # on the registration form but I won’t be showing her obviously for a few years probably and it seems like kind of a waste to pay the full membership fee for a year for no real reason. If I have to then fine but just wanted to see if anyone knew if you could do it the other way without becoming an actual member. Thanks!

You should be able to. It’s just that any points she would earn won’t count (but that wouldn’t matter to you). They are very helpful if you call and talk to them. they should be able to help you figure out the best way.

Thank you!

If I did decide to show her in hand or something somewhere (not likely but you never know) I could then become a member before the show and have it count? And in the future when I am ready to show her I would just become a member then and it would be fine and she could have points?

So, you are trying to register your filly in a stud book or Breed Association??? And it asked for a USEF #???

Can you clarify?

You record the horse with USEF, you register it with a breed association. You do not have to record it with USEF to show, you can get just an ID# plus paying a non member fee to show but no points will be kept. Pretty sure you do not have to be a USEF member to get an ID number but you do to record it for points either annually or lifetime.

Cant see an issue with waiting until you will actually be showing to join and record the filly then add the number to the breed registry information but call them first.

I think she’s trying to do the lifetime horse registration for the filly with USEF without having to do a membership for herself. There is a discount for lifetime USEF horse registration prior to the age of 1.

F8 - USEF calls it a lifetime horse registration.

I believe this can be done, can you get an USEF online account without getting a membership? If so, you can register the filly.

I did the same thing with my colt. I was a member but didn’t pay my dues this year because I am not showing. I waited until I got his RPSI papers after his inspection and sent a copy via fax to USEF. You have to provide proof that they are under a year old to get the discount.

You can get a member number for yourself but not be active.

Thanks, that does answer my question perfectly. I am registering her with her breed association as well and I know I can add her USEF number to that later on. What kind of proof would I need to provide that she is under a year for USEF? I would hope to have back her breed registry papers before the first of January but I know those things take time.

If you don’t have papers or were not registering the foal with a breed association, you can have your vet sign an affidavit or send a copy of the foal exam if you had one done.

Best to send copies of registration papers as the registration number will be included on the USEF recording.

You are so welcome!

Did you breed your filly yourself or did you buy her? You can do what tuckawayfarm suggests or call USEF and ask them if there is a different way.

Does USEF age the horses by Jan first or by their real birthdate?

It is most certainly well worthwhile to register your foal with USEF now @ $35 vs the increased fees if you wait.

Thankfully, there is now a graduated fee schedule (foals $35, yearlings $85, 2yos $160, 3 and up $200), but the savings are significant (especially for breeders who produce multiple foals per year).
