So today I went into my local Southern States for feed and was informed that they no longer carry Triple Crown and have switched to ProElite. I’ve been away from my horses for a year and have come home to some pretty skinny thoroughbreds and 1 chubby draft. One of the Tbreds is 24 and has recently lost his vision (being addressed by vet, he will be tested for metabolic issues ASAP). Now I need to figure out what to switch to. I was feeding TC Senior, Legends Growth, and Legends Lite, I’m interested to hear any feedback on their ProElite counterparts? I left with a bag of ProElite Senior to start with. I’m only about 1.5 hours from Lexington Ky so have also been looking at Pennfield, Cavalor, and looking for another TC dealer but have been reading bad reviews about TC lately. I would appreciate any help or opinions! Thanks so much!
I lived near Lexington at one point and if I could go back the first thing I would do is put my horses back on McCauley feed (based in Versailles) in a heart beat. They are very knowledgeable and I bet you could talk with someone there that could point you in a direction for your horses. I am in no way associated with them, but I love them. I even shipped their feed out to WA state after I moved for awhile until I could no longer justify the cost.
awesome, thank you!
I would go with something other then tc senior. I’ve had nothing but brick hard feed. So I’m switching them over to alfalfa pellets and a vit/min with renew gold…added for fat content. Horse’s aren’t looking that good on tc senior any way both are ribby.
Was going to switch to proforce senior. Decided against it.
yes I really feel like they used to do great on it but they look awful now… the person who cared for them in my absence fed the same as I always had. I’ve heard a lot of complaints too. They get alfalfa pellets mixed in w Senior. I haven’t had to research new food in so long, it’s a bit overwhelming.
Triple Crown has a history of inconsistent production in part due to not having their own mills. Now that more ‘quality system based’ mills are manufacturing for them (e.g. Purina, Blue Seal in our area) that should change . We’re in So States feed area and we can now get TC products at our local Purina dealer. You might want to check to see if a Purina dealer in your area is carrying it.
interesting… I will check that out, thank you!
Your store should continue to carry Legends Growth and Lite, since those are Southern States brands, not Triple Crown. The new ProElite line is supposed to be very high quality, but I have not tried it or heard from anyone who has. It’s worth a try. There is also a Legends senior feed, which you might try as well. All of the Legends nutritional information is available on the Southern States website. I’m guessing ProElite is there as well. You can compare it to the Triple Crown info from their website.
My barn just switched to Pro Elite instead of Triple Crown Sr. for two senior horses. Horses look better on it than they did with Triple Crown Sr. They are feeding a lb less of the Pro elite than the TCS as well. I’m a big fan of Legends feeds in general. Horses find it very tasty, but the senior is higher in sugar than I would want to feed a horse that has metabolic issues.
I had no idea about the production issues - I’ve been a big TC fan for many years, but I’ve always lived in the Mid Atlantic area (a couple different states) and have never had a hard time getting it. Despite recent frigid temps my TC Sr has been fine to scoop, and the one race horse I have on it now is gaining so well on 5-6 lbs a day I’m tempted to cut him back since he will be with me for a while yet.
I do have to feed 9-12 lbs to some of the tbs to get them up to the weight I like, but it is beet pulp/roughage based, and it puts such a great foot on them I don’t mind. They frequently come to me with quarter cracks and epoxy everywhere, and leave with a nice hard quality hoof. I do love my blacksmith, though, and think that once they get a balanced trim rather than the long toed race track trim it helps with the hoof quality.
opened the ProElite bag to start transitioning and it looks exactly the same, just fresher than my TC Senior. It looked more moist but still wasn’t a frozen brick. Fingers crossed!
It’s a very comparable feed, slightly lower in calories, but the ProElite line of feeds was developed using a lot of research from Progressive…
Skip Cavalor. I have used it. It is overpriced and one of the types I fed made my horse really hot. It didn’t help that my particular dealer kept running out of the type I wanted, that is how I fed him the couple of bags that made him hot.
My horse massage therapist/saddle fitter had a few endurance clients that used Cavalor for about a year. They have all moved onto something else since in the long run they were not happy with it.
We have switched from TC Senior to ProElite and are not having any issues with it. It got a little hard during the cold spell but that happens with Hallway, McCauleys, etc. too. I was always happy with TC Senior for my senior horse…never had an issue with quality that others have mentioned.
I believe SS in Lex is still going to carry TC products…that is what they have told our barn at least.
I feed Cavaler, but I am not sure that is carried everywhere. HorseDVM provides a useful tool for comparing feeds - http://www.horsedvm.com/comparefeeds.php
No concerns with ProElite–it’s a great feed and pretty much identical to the TC stuff–but I switched to Legends Carbcare Performance this winter because I just couldn’t deal with another winter of chiselling feed out of the bin (yeah, I’m looking at you TC Senior.) I had high hopes for the ProElite but it was still bricky.
The Legends has done very well for me, and bonus for skinny, picky horses–it is dense. You feed less volume for the calories, which is perfect for my herd. Works less well for people who have fatties who need more chew time, I imagine
That’s when you feed the Legends ration balancer which my pony looks fabulous on. Legends is my favorite line of feed.
I had fed Legends for my horses for 4 years and I was really happy with it. It helped my picky ottb gain a bunch of weight. But the last 10 or so bags I bought were SO inconsistent in texture that it started to worry me so I switched mine to TC Senior. It was about time anyway- he’s 18! We’re still in transition so he is getting 1lb Legends S&P and 2lbs TC Senior. I have to say he looks incredible now. He’s been at a good weight for a while but now he is super shiny and looks more muscle toned. Bonus is that TC is only 11% NSC so I can feed a handful to the mini when he gets his meds and not worry about the 29% that was in Legends S&P.
The bags are pretty brick like in the cold but I drop kick them on the ground before I open the bag to put in the feed bin. Haven’t had to break it up once its in the bin.
I have been feeding the ProElite senior for nearly 2 months.
My bags consistently have pieces of corn and oats in them, which are not part of the ingredients. I did contact them, they sent a coupon for a free bag, but nothing has changed. My horses like it, but due to bad QC at the mill making it, I will be driving 60 miles one way for Seminole feed again.
