ProElite Topline Xtreme

It’s a whey based protein supplement by Progressive. Based on some issues my new horse has been having and some trouble I’ve had finding quite the right diet for him, this seemed like something worth trying. Did not do well with soy based protein. I haven’t tried Tri Amino yet but one of his symptoms is more exercise intolerance like, and I thought the post exercise feeding routine for this would be good.

Except this not so picky eater thinks it’s poison.

Anyone have tips for getting the horse to eat this, considering I have a big expensive bucket of it since it comes in only one size…

A friend bought that on advice. In our barn of 37 we couldn’t get a single horse to even try it. I used to use Topline Advanced but after two buckets that came smelling like dead fish, I switched to Nutramino from Horsetech.

You can buy flavoring powders (I know HorseTech has some), and HT will also send a sample. A lot of horses like fenugreek, so that might work. Check them out, I forget what other flavors they have. I suspect apple and banana are 2, not sure if there are any others.

Some people crush up peppermints. Some horses love Gatorade, and there are some flavors you can buy as a powder - fruit punch, orange (a hit with a lot of horses) and grape, and not sure if there are others available in powder.

Tried Gatorade already. This stuff has a very strong smell. It was sweet smelling though so I thought he might like it. Nope! It is a very small pellet so not that easy to mix in a flavoring. Wetting it some to mix in Gatorade seemed to make it worse. He will drink buckets of Gatorade scented water so I know he likes the flavor.

also tried disguising it with his evening dose of Buggzo (very strong) and some grain…

I wonder if ProElite will stand behind their product and issue you a refund since he won’t eat it.

If this stuff is a no go, maybe whey protein powder–the flavored stuff, for people–would be worth a shot? At least you can try a small purchase, and it’s already flavored!

This stuff kind of smells like a human product… like vanilla coconut already, but I did consider that. Or a pea protein powder. This product has whey and aminos added and BCAAs.

I tried him on TC 30% for a while after he’d gained weight that he lost traveling, but despite having fewer calories, he got some concerning fat pads. So I put him back on TC Complete which he ate to start, but less than a full ration (around 3 or so lbs). He gets Platinum GI for v/m. He then strained something in his back/SI area, and when I backed off work for a couple weeks, lost considerable topline to where I had to go back to shimming my saddle like it was months ago. Did some treatment and put him on Robaxin and added a pound of Complete to help him eat that. As we are getting back into more work, he’s starting to fill out where he lost muscle. He’s always been a horse that poops out kind of quickly, but we had a lot of work to do when he arrived because he was pretty wrecked by the trip which was extra long. And even though his back was sore, he was worse with rest. So, I had a little suspicion of some MFM type thing and was looking for help with muscle endurance and recovery without adding too many calories or the wrong type of food. MSU’s information on MFM says “At present we recommend a diet with low to moderate starch and sugar content, fat added if needed for weight and the addition of a whey-based protein supplement to add muscle bulk.” Recommended to feed within 45 mins of exercise. Purina Supersport was another suggestion, but you have to feed pounds of it according to the directions which seems like too much food.

He does get a couple of flakes of alfalfa a day so should get some decent lysine from that. The TC Gold line seemed interesting but it looks like I’d have to special order it here from one of the dealers. Since his main food seems good, I was hoping not to change that up again but just add something on that if he doesn’t respond well to I can take away without changing his entire meal.

I use the TriAnimo on three of my horses, and they all eat it with no hesitation.

I have fed TriAmino/Nutramino plenty in the past to other horses, and I agree it’s palatable. But I was specifically looking for a whey supplement and one with BCAAs.

Maybe he’s just more into strawberry?

I went to go look this stuff up, and can only find the Progressive product with this name. Is there another with ProElite branding?

http://www.prognutrition.com/pn/prod…reme/index.htm

Did turn up this ProElite topline product, too, but with another name (and soy based):

https://proelitehorsefeed.com/produc…ine-advantage/

@Simkie It’s Progressive. Sorry I think they changed their RB names/look over to ProElite after Cargill bought them(?), and that ProElite TopLine Advantage used to be named Progressive ProAdd. In any event, it’s the first product you linked. Not the TopLine Advantage.

Gotcha…sorry.

So HorseTech sells whey protein isolate as a basic ingredient (meaning no flavors added), and the analysis is [TABLE=“border: 1”]

The fat comes from flax, vegetable oil and rice bran oil. It also contains Betaine and L-Tryptophan (% not provided). The thought is that Betaine reduces lactic acid buildup and aids in muscle recovery.

Our alfalfa is usually a late cutting over 20% protein (don’t know the analysis of the current batch since the barn started buying it–boarders used to have to buy their own).

In the Platinum GI, he gets 3 scoops a day, and a typical 2 scoop dose has the following printed analysis for aminos:

  • Arginine (Min) 1,420mg
  • Glycine (Min) 1,020mg
  • Methionine (Min) 340mg
  • Isoleucine (Min) 760mg
  • Leucine (Min) 1,105mg
  • Valine (Min) 1,035mg
  • Lysine (Min) 1,410mg
  • Tyrosine (Min) 440mg
  • Cystine (Min) 290mg
  • Glutamic Acid (Glutamine) (Min) 3,785mg
  • Phenylalanine (Min) 820mg
  • Threonine (Min) 775mg
  • Aspartic Acid (Min) 1,685mg
  • Alanine (Min) 875mg
  • Histidine (Min) 425mg
  • Proline (Min) 735mg
So, should I try whey powder that he still might not eat? The scoop size of whey is 90cc (3x bigger than Nutramino scoop). Or just go with Nutramino to start? Or something like Platinum Power? Or order TC Gold Balancer as a top dress?

Vet is going to recheck him in about a week. We might ultrasound his back. I don’t think I can just try to up his energy/protein with more grain because he’ll be obese on 6+ lbs. He eats only about 4-5 flakes grass hay (mixed orchard) and 2 alfalfa a day. He will waste any more grass hay. Turnout is mostly dry lot. There’s no lameness, xrays of feet are good, saddle was fitted to him (and is starting to fit better again, he just needed a Thinline pad when he lost topline and would have needed shims on the dressage saddle so I didn’t use it for a while). I took a lot of xrays on PPE and they were reviewed by 4 vets including the PPE vet a radiologist.

No soreness under saddle area or withers or neck, all lumbar, SI area, glutes, a little bit hamstrings. Flexes fine. He was a very front to back horse, and I’ve been trying to get him using his booty and back more and carrying himself. Had him about 7 months. The level of soreness for basically 20-30 min work sessions at his age (8 yrs, been in solid work and showing since 4, was getting around 1.25m courses fine), and the level of fatigue at the end of this amount of time, when I take the cue to wrap it up, is concerning. I try to take him on a long rein walk hack before putting him away, on different footing (grass, road base, dirt) and gradual hills around the property. He’s a very willing to please kind of guy but I can tell he’s struggling/tired. I’d give him more rest days but that seems to make it worse. He works 5-6 days/wk.

Fwiw, I’ve been toying with trying whey powder for my old lady. This thread and then this sale got me ordering:

https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/570254

$60 bucks for 11 pounds. I bought the unflavored.

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹A whole lot cheaper than “horse” options.

Let me know if she eats it!

Gave some samples out at my barn and none of the horses are interested in this stuff. Ugh

Ha, I will keep you posted! Posts on that thread largely say it’s pretty flavorless

Of all of the possible flavorings that could have been added to the Progressive product they chose something way more suitable to human consumption than horse. I hope that something “unflavored” would be better. I do like the small pellet quality of this product since most of what I’ve read about pea and whey proteins (For people) have been largely problems with texture, like clumping and caking. I know my horse will not eat flax if I let it get too slimy/goopy in the bucket.

No one will eat it. How does this company not know this is a problem?

Horse is still dealing with unusual muscle fatigue after short amounts of exercise. He has a follow up with the vet this week and we plan to test E and Se.

I received that people protein powder today. I’ll let you know if it’s edible
