Prolite Girth Rubbing :(

I just bought a prolite girth for my very narrow, very forward girth-grooved pony.

We’ve put a week’s worth of rides in it now, and I just noticed yesterday that he’s developing a rub. :frowning: Cue the hysterical tears, because the girth has been working great to keep the saddle in place on his little round self and true to the marketing, he was moving better in the first ride. Since he does get rubbed quite easily (the Tekna shaped girth gave him a rub just while warming up!), I was heartened to see no rubs in the first week.

Has anyone tried the Lemieux covers? http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEMIEUX-FAIRFAX-LAMBSKIN-WOOL-SHAPED-GIRTH-COVER-BLACK-/361516146282?var=&hash=item542c0a9e6a:m:mbQTWCHuzmG6EZZGJ3qC64A

Do they hold up well?

No clue about the girth covers, but I was looking at them in case I started having the same issue. So far, I’ve been lucky and haven’t had any rubs after using the Prolite girth for at least a month now.

Here’s an option if you have the Narrow Gauge girth: https://nuumed.com/253-girth-sleeve-to-fit-fairfax-narrow-gauge-girths-fairfax#/114-size-26_inch/2-colour-black

Just wanted to chime in to say I had the exact same problem. The galling and sensitivity started when the weather got hot - really hot. When reading older threads there were a few who said a sheepskin cover wouldn’t help, so I didn’t go that route. Several said vaseline or similar lubricant would be the cure. Didn’t help for him. Tried a “slick” cover made from something like stretchy nylon (like a tail bag), per instructions on a web page - idea being to make it more slippery so it doesn’t catch on the skin. This didn’t help either.

I’ve abandoned that girth for now and want to try something thinner - the Passier Elastic one. Now if I can just get them to send me the right size . . . (they’re handmade so aren’t necessarily the size that’s stamped on the leather part. [???]).

Maybe the sheepskin will work after all. I’ll be interested to find out.

Maybe try a total saddle fit girth? I have a horse who has chronic saddle shifting problems and it helps tremendously…no rubs.

I have a Total Saddle Fit girth. I have been using it 3.5 months and it started rubbing 2 weeks ago when we started getting some REALLY hot days.

I use the le mieux cover with that girth, wears and washes really well and NO rubs.

I have one of these and am not currently using it due to rubs. I purchased it in the winter and it was great. Not so when the mare lost her winter coat. I personally did not see much difference with it.

I paid a chunk of change for it and am sad it is sitting in a tack trunk currently.

I know this might sound odd but I had heard ointments like Desitin help and suggested that to a couple of customers with the same issue. Not neat but they said it did help. I have never tried it personally.

I had no issues getting the right size. Have you been using smart pak?

My Passier rubbed. Make sure you get the leather part really soft. Its very wide, too. If you don’t get it long enough it can definitely interfere, but overall I love it.

I’m now using a cheap wintec, after ordering every cover, padding, material imaginable. its the best one, amazingly.

I’m not a fan of the inside of Prolite- the stitching seems “rough”.

I contacted Nuumed through their webpage a few weeks ago and never heard back. I absolutely love the Prolite girth but my mare has gotten the occasional bump in the girth area from it – nothing open, just a bump that goes away in a day or 2.

Just sent another message so we’ll see.

Yes, I did get it from Smartpak! Their cust. service is great - salesperson is going to measure some others and get back to me. I was dismayed to find the one marked 75cm (~30") is shorter than my Lettia 28." [buckle to buckle]

The Wintec seems to be very popular! But has its detractors, too. It will be ironic if that’s what I end up with, as it’s the one I first used on him (as a loaner).

It was suggested to me, too. Would probably be great UNLESS horse has to stand outside in broiling temps. Most ointments have a petroleum base. I just checked Desitin and it does too.

The odd thing with my pony was that simultaneously with the girth rub his skin was peeling (majorly in some places) between his front legs and at girth area. I tried putting things on it - to medicate, to soothe, etc. - No luck. He even had swelling at top insides of legs at one point and was short-stepping.

Finally one of the BMs who’d worked with stock horses out west, said “That’s what we used to call heat rash. Best thing is just leave it alone, let his body heal itself. And make sure not to put any petroleum product on him, because it changes in the heat.”

So I checked my fly spray, too. It, along with other pastey stuff I’d put on him, was oil (petroleum) based. Ceased and desisted. Eventually cleared up as long as I kept the fly spray (and everything else) off. Even a water-based spray started to build up on him (I spritzed him with water after riding but even one application could end up concentrated under his front legs if it rained) and it started all over again. At its worst it was itchy and sore. Even his chest was peeling.

Poor pony. Worst part was knowing I did it to him!

Because the design is the same (meant to have less pressure at the front of the girth) I’m not sure that it would solve anything, unfortunately. I am also less than impressed with the quality on the TSF girths I’ve seen, which is why I ordered the Prolite instead. Even though it’s synthetic, I think it’s nicer.

Thank you! I’ve ordered it so we’ll see how it does on my sensitive guy.

If it hadn’t produced such dramatic changes in my pony, I would just chuck it in the tack trunk and call it done. But it’s light years beyond all the other shaped and unshaped girths I’ve tried, so I don’t want to just give up on it. This guy gets rubs even from soft string girths, so although sad, I wasn’t actually that surprised.

I recently discovered BodyGlide (product runners use for chafing). Same girth that’s fine through the winter leaves rubs in the summer. Just apply the BodyGlide to my mare’s girth area before rides and no more rubs.

I even use it on my mare’s chest to help with fly sheet rubs. Not only did it stop the rubs from getting worse, the hair has actually grown back (while still wearing the offending fly sheet).

Great tips on this thread. I have the le mieux girth cover (and several other sheepskin covers), and i really like it. If my horse gets a girth rub, I switch to my other girth that isn’t so curvy to allow the rub to heal. I have a sensitive chestnut that really is prone to rubs in the heat when he is sweating. Best of luck!

I also have a LeMieux girth cover, bought it on Ebay from the U.K. It is extremely thick, soft, and holds up beautifully.

Update: I did finally get a Nuumed girth cover for my Prolite girth. Seemed to help, but slid forward some. I took it off recently and the mare is fine without it - but of course the weather is cooler now and she’s got a lot of winter fuzz on her belly and legs. So I’ll continue to leave the cover off, and maybe put it back on again when she sheds out.

Thanks for the update! A barn mate of mine went through hell and back trying to cure her horse’s girth area sores. After several years and dozens of different girths and salves she never found a permanent solution. For unrelated reasons her horse is now retired. Best of luck to you OP!!
