Recognized show this week-end (my second one ever!) and I am not sure what to wear shirt wise. Am I supposed to wear a stock tie or pin? I have a shirt with the “priest collar” that I usually wear. Will that be okay?
(A bit of a moot point as I don’t own a stock tie and wouldn’t have time to get one, but at least I’ll know for next time.)
Oh, so fun! What level are you going? I’m sure there are variations depending on your area but here (New England), your shirt is absolutely ok at least through T. I’ve often ridden with one instead of the stock I do have because it’s so much simpler and faster to put on.
But your options may be more open than that. Is this a one day? If so, then you get to think about skipping your jacket even for dressage - my favorite rule change ever! If you don’t wear a jacket, you don’t wear a choker or stock tie, and I unbutton those top buttons, or even just wear a button-down. Delightful. But fair warning that not many people around here choose to skip the jackets for dressage.
Good luck and have a blast!
Novice, and it’s 2 days.
Dressage and Stadium the first day, XC next day.
It’s supposed to get cold the day before- maybe even snow! - so I don’t mind the jacket!!
First, at Novice you are no longer required to wear a jacket for dressage, regardless of whether it is one day or not - you can wear a shirt with a collar and sleeves, but without neckware.
But if it is cold, a jacket makes sense. With a jacket, you must wear a shirt with “neckware”. This includes a tie, a choker, or a stock. Pin is required with a stock, optional with a choker or tier. Most judges/TDs, consider the “wraparound” collars to be “neckware”.
But if your shirt just has a standup collar, with an opening at the front (no wraparound), you DO need either a stock or a choker over it. Or a shirt with a “normal” collar, and a tie.
See EV 114.5.a
The exact wording is “Shirt - of conservative color, with stock and pin, or choker, or tie.”
Yes, if you wear a jacket be sure to wear neckwear.
In 2013 I was at my second recognized event and my trainer wasn’t around. Being the airheaded adult amateur I am, I went in and did my dressage test … without neckware. The judge asked me to approach the box and told me I may be eliminated and she would have to examine the rule book. I apologized profusely and left the ring feeling awful. Apparently the rules say (for the level I was at anyway, BN), it was at the discretion of the judge to eliminate or not. Needless to say I’ll never forget the damn stock tie again. All in all it was a moot point as I ended up falling off on cross country twice … which DOES result in elimination
If you are so inclined, there might be a tack shop with a trailer on site where you could buy a stock tie you like (possibly even a pre-tied one). Certainly not required, though, as long as you are wearing a typical ratcatcher (wrap collar or the old button-on type). If you wear a stock, you will need a pin. I use one of my grandmother’s broaches, it doesn’t have to be fancy or a “stock tie” specific pin.
I have evented at Rec and non-rec events. I wear the technical riding shirts that zip up with a standup mock turtleneck type collar. Have worn these with and without a jacket - when temps waived jackets. As someone stated earlier, this year jackets are no longer required BN through Training. I have never worn neckwear for either scenario and never been confronted. Just zipped up and rode in - maybe I got lucky??
Also, can I wear a dark brown coat?
Yes, the only color requirement fot the coat at Novice is that it be dark (or tweed).
OP-Are you in Colorado? Are you riding at Spring Gulch? If so, Happy Horse Tack will be there and they usually have a selection of stock ties with them.
The USEA just redid the www.discovereventing.com website. It has a pretty easy to understand page on what to wear to your first event. Good luck! http://www.discovereventing.com/what-do-i-wear/
I completely forgot about this rule change!!! I’ll be sure to have it printed and highlighted when I go to my first show of the season. Last year the judge held me up and was a witch about how I should be eliminated because I wasn’t wearing a jacket…for Novice, at a show that had been condensed to a single day instead of two.
I’d forgotten it had been changed too - thanks, Janet! And not only have I been lectured by a judge about not wearing my jacket but I was lectured twice by the same judge - even though I told her about the rule change. Cracks me up.
Yes!! Mine wrote in big, block letters “SHOULD BE ELIMINATED” across the top of my test!
Not that I’ll probably make it to a recognized event with my horse for a looong time, but just in case…
Does this type of shirt count as a “choker”? I’ve worn it underneath my jacket at recognized events before (just baby Beginner Novice though) https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/essex-classics-talent-yarn-shirt--longsleeve-11096
And conversely, if jackets were waived and that does qualify as having a choker, does that not qualify as "long or short sleeved with collar and without neckwear"?
I hate stock ties. Please don’t tell me I need to wear one haha
Per Janet’s comments in this thread:
Most judges/TDs, consider the “wraparound” collars to be “neckware”.
I’ve always considered the wrap collars to be the equivalent of a plain ratcatcher. Not that it means anything re: legality, I’ve shown in this shirt many times sans stock tie and never been called out: http://www.doversaddlery.com/goode-rider-prix-show-shirt/p/w1-c201151a/
And they wonder why entries are dwindling?!
Yes, I’d like to pay $250 so you can chastise me like a toddler.
On both those shirts-
It is up to the interpretation of the TD and/or judge.
If you wear them without a jacket, and with the neck OPEN, I think most judges will consider them “without neckware”.
But with the neck closed, your best bet is to ask the judge ahead of time. It isn’t a full “wraparound”. It just isn’t something anticipated by the rules, and the rules have not caught up with “the fashion”.
I wore this shirt in white: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/pi…smartpak-14467
I showed in it zipped up, with a jacket and without a jacket. No questions or comments at recognized events.
Not that it helps anyone, but if I ever heard of someone getting eliminated for having one of the button/wrap collars, I’d seriously question the priorities of the sport.
