Pros/Cons of ISR/Weser-ems Pony Stallion Inspection

We are blessed with a very lovely Connemara stallion. I am/have considered presenting him for inspection with both registries… although leaning toward ISR. And while it gives a nice goal, some good publicity if he does well, a part of me feels like it’s just writing more checks and not really necessary for his career athletically or in the breeding shed.

Our market is primarily mares outside the breed, as we have enough purebred mares in our personal herd that we limit outside mares. It would help attract “other” mares, but more than him being seen out showing? i.e. Is approval as an ISR/Weser-em stallion more or less impressive than being out showing at 4th level/ training/prelim ( which he is capable of).

Like to hear other’s perspectives, especially those with sport horse mares.

Truthfully I don’t think it makes financial since to do the Open Book Registries (WE, RPSI, ISR) with the Connemara stallions and maybe Purebred Welsh either. They are a very niche market and people who breed to Connemara Stallions want a Connemara/Connemara Cross or are breeding for an Ammy/Junior Friendly mount for a specific discipline (Dressage/Eventing).

It costs $75 to register a Half Bred Foal with the ACPS vs $150 (or more) to register a foal with one of the open books (that also require a foal inspection/travel).

What I found was while we did attract new business many mare owners were reluctant to follow through with the actual foal inspection/registration process. Especially when their was a cheaper alternative. So we would end up paying the Annual Stallion activation fee based on the mares we bred–and then no actual foals would follow through to be inspected/registered. We had many times more foals registered with the ACPS both pure and part bred. Hence very few recorded offspring in the open books for our stallion.

I suspect you are much more likely to attract new business for your stallion though Performance and even more through promotion of the Offspring.

I don’t think I would do it. My reasoning being that registering them Weser-Ems is more appreciated by the dressage pony community, and my guess is as you have a Connemara, he will be more focused on jumping/eventing. And I think most people would rather register with Connemara than ISR.
