Protection from Bugs through Supplements

My pony broke out in welts caused by insects during our first spring together 2 years ago. My vet recommended Platinum Performance Skin and Allergy given year round, and the pony has not suffered another outbreak since. However, he doesn’t like the taste, and getting it into him has proved a daunting task as barns and feeders change. I’m looking for an effective and palatable solution, and I see SmartPak has a supplement for that purpose. Any suggestions? Has anyone used the SmartPak option?

I use the SP Bug Off for my retired pasture boarded gelding. He doesn’t like being sprayed by BO and I can’t get out by him too frequently so he gets the pellets and wears his fly boots. I honestly don’t know how much they help but they’re palatable and affordable. When he was at my DILs farm I used the Horse Tech Buggzo and that one seemed to help deter bugs.

Sorry! I couldn’t find this post, so thought maybe I neglected to post it and posted another…if I run across the second, I will delete it!

Yes lol I see the other post and there are two active ones at this time. I don’t think they can be deleted though.

I found the UltraCruz Equine Skin and Allergy Supplement for Horses to be comparable to Platinum Performance Skin & Allergy. It also comes in pelleted form which was much more palatable for my mare.

SmartPak does not offer a true allergy supplement, but I have been using SmartBreathe Ultra Pellets for ease of use since I can get it with my other supplements. It doesn’t have quercetin which has been effective for her in the past, but it does have MSM, citrus bioflavonoids, and spirulina and seems to take the edge off for her.

All else being equal, I would have her on the UltraCruz, but it’s just not convenient for us right now—or particularly necessary, her reaction to bug bites has greatly improved with immunotherapy.

Thank you!

Thank you! Heading off to Google UltraCruz now….

So I ordered the Santa Cruz and used it to replace the Platinum Performance. Today after several days, the pony has welts/hives on his sides, a reaction to bug bites. Back to PP we go.
