Protective work gloves?

Last night I cut a big gouge out of my thumb through a pair of heavy leather work gloves with my hoof knife while I was trimming. I can only imagine what would be left of my thumb without the gloves…

I need new gloves. These were cheap hardware store all leather and men’s small so loose fitting. They’d worn through a couple spots so I threw them out.

Anyone got recommendations for something better/tougher?

thanks.

Our farrier has a pair of Kevlar gloves he uses sometimes, and keeps his knives ultra sharp so they don’t get hung up.

www.uline.com search kevlar gloves. The ones he has don’t come in small, but a couple other styles do, the Super Gription look promising. rated 3 for cut, 3 for abrasion. Size small available.

www.grainger.com has Condor Cut Resistant Gloves, cut level 4, nitrile coating, Kevlar lined. They come in XS @ $6.64-$7.41

Just remember the Kevlar gloves are cut resistant not cut proof. If you’re really clumsy… there are chainmail gloves that are more resistant.

Thanks guys. I’m not extremely clumsy - first cut in 7 years of trimming, but it’s a nasty gouge so I’m keen not to repeat!

Not the cheapest things, but Ansell makes a range of gloves in cut resistant fabrics. Not quite the kind that you’d drag a fillet knife across, and not very puncture resistant, but a good balance of dexterous and protective. The cut resistance comes in a variety of levels. A hoof knife accident would be prevented or seriously reduced.

I was trying to be a bit light about a serious matter. Glad it’s your first cut in 7 years of trimming. Best part of the glove protection, you only need one glove (on the non knife hand) I think you’ll find the Kevlar gloves to be the best balance of cut resistance and dexterity for hoof trimming. Another option is a stainless wire & Kevlar combination. Do a search on butcher’s or meat cutting gloves.

I trim with a grinder and HAVE to have Kevlar gloves. I order 'em from Amazon.

The best gloves I’ve found for trimming and protection are sold by Ace Hardware and not all stores carry them so I buy them on their online store.
They’re gold and black , softish but heavy leather w/ elasticized area for good finger movement and last a long time. Around 20-$22.
