PSA - ProElite Diet Balancer now "Grass Advantage"

Went to look up something in the nutrition analysis of the ProElite Diet Balancer this past weekend that I’ve been feeding my three boys, and poof it was no more! emailed ProElite, and this is what they sent me back:

[I]Thank you for your inquiry. There has been a name and packaging change for Diet Balancer to Grass Advantage:

https://proelitehorsefeed.com/product/grass-advantage/

Some slight tweaks were made to improve amino acid, digestive aids and palatability. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Looks like they have TWO balancers now - Grass Advantage and Alfalfa Advantage. Just thought I’d pass the info along before someone else is surprised to find the “Diet Balancer” they’d been feeding is no longer available like I did! :).

Looks like the main difference is that the Grass Advantage is 30% Protein, 13% NSC and the Alfalfa Advantage is 15% Protein and 16% NSC - just giving it a quick look.

Yes, most of the Progressive line is merging with most of the ProElite line.

The specialty products - Rejuvenaide, Foal’s First Starter & Creep, etc - are being left along.

Cargill is really screwing with good things, despite their promise not to.

Grass Advantage is a balancer designed for all/mostly grass forage diets.
Alfalfa Advantage is designed for all/mostly alfalfa/legume diets (or even a grass hay that’s high enough protein)

Progressive always had those 2 Balancers.

Interesting…

Didn’t ProElite already have some of these products? (i.e. a senior formula, etc.)

Are they keeping the ProElite formulas on these or adopting the Progressive ones? Or were they always more or less exactly the same?

See the above graphic.

Yes, PE has/had the equivalents (other than not having the alfalfa balancer)

PE was modeled after the PN research, so they were already very similar.

I see the graphic and don’t see how it answers my question.

Progressive Nutrition Senior is “transitioning” to ProElite Senior. They were (supposedly) two separate products prior to this month. Now they are saying they will be the same thing. So are both formulas changing, or are they just sunsetting the equivalent Progressive formulas, or were they always the same exact formula branded differently? “Modeled” doesn’t necessarily mean the same to me.

I’m hung up on the word “transitioning” in these cases. But I’m taking it to mean the Progressive Nutrition equivalents are basically gone and ProElite is gaining the addition of Progressive balancers to their line.

they weren’t the same formulas, just close. I don’t know if the “slight tweaks” from the OP means the PE products were changed to be more or less identical to the PN products, or what.

There will be no more PN products listed (yes, entirely separate products before now). There will only be the ProElite name.

The veterinary line of products will still be PN.

PE already has the Diet Balancer which will have a new name, and the PE name is just gaining the Alfalfa balancer, though I can’t tell you whether the above-mentioned tweaks changed anything in either of them

Thanks @JB for the additional info. Very helpful. The merging of the two lines makes sense - now at least I know the “why”.

I never downloaded the ProElite Diet Balancer spec sheet to my computer. so have no way to know what %s or ppm were changed on the Grass Advantage, since the Diet Balancer is now gone from their website. I do know the protien % is the same as before. But I could have sworn the NSC was less (not 13%). May be wrong about that though. No way to confirm.

The last info I have is the following - I couldn’t figure out how to quickly remove the other 2 columns for this copy/paste

The PN Senior Sweet is nothing like the PE Senior unfortunately… Just comparing ingredients… I was hoping this would finally make PN SS more accessible, but nope. The PE Senior is too much like Triple Crown Senior which my senior just doesn’t thrive on or eat well (I’ve used it with great success with other horses). Oh well, I’m slightly disappointed with this change…

Awesome, thanks! So the tweaks to “improve” the AAs went both ways - slightly up on lysine, slightly down on methionine

Fat changes are NBD when you’re talking about such a low feeding rate.

The Omega 6 EFA wasn’t even a big deal at the low feeding rate - 12.26gm down to 5.9gm per pound.

Se probably didn’t change at all - max was probably not (much)higher than 1.8 to begin with.

I wonder how the new K compares to the old PN K - we just didn’t have that info :frowning: New being lower than Old is good for the HYPP horses, that’s about all.

Went to my local feed store this past Wed, and they only had one bag left of the old Diet Balancer and my second bag was the new “Grass Advantage”. The Grass Advantage pellet is darker than the old Diet Balancer formula. The staff there say they removed something that colored the old Diet Balancer (can’t remember if they called it a dye or not), so that would be an ingredient change that wouldn’t show up in the analysis.

They also changed the bag. It is no longer multi-layered paper, but a similar sort of bag material that Nutrena feeds are in. Its very slippery, almost glossy. Thankfully, it is still a 50 pound bag.

My horse has started losing weight with this change. Barn manager says the new version of grass diet balancer is in an extruded pellet now, more dense and heavier, so he is getting less of it. I’m reaching out to the Nutrena nutritionist to see if amounts should be adjusted. This had previously improved his topline a great deal. Now he’s already losing topline. he’s also leaving some of his meal behind when he always finished to the last drop before the change.

If you were feeding the same volume, then he’d be getting more pounds if it’s a heavier feed.

I’m reaching out to the Nutrena nutritionist to see if amounts should be adjusted.

This is a ProElite feed, not Nutrena. Both are under the Cargill umnbrella, but someone at Nutrena might not know anything about the PE line

This had previously improved his topline a great deal. Now he’s already losing topline. he’s also leaving some of his meal behind when he always finished to the last drop before the change.

How long has he been on the new formula? The facilities only started producing the new stuff 2 weeks ago, are you sure he’s even been getting the new stuff? Many stores still have the old formula.

The ProElite Grass Advantage I got is not extruded. It is all pellet - same size and shape as the ProElite Diet Balancer product was, just a darker color.

I honestly have never heard of a “extruded pellet”, and not even sure it’s possible. An extruded feed is not pelleted - it “pops” after it’s pushed through the die, and looks like nuggets of stuff.

I have no idea if individual ingredients can be extruded, and then “smashed” again to become part of a pelleted form.

The spec sheet on the Grass Advantage just calls it “pelleted feed”. No mention there of “extruded” in their processes. However, they do have a supplement ProElite Omega Advantage that IS extruded (and it looks a bit like dog food, definitely not pellets).

Grass Advantage is a pellet, not extruded. Omega Advantage is extruded. Extruded feeds weigh less than pellets by volume, not more. I can’t remember the changes to PE Senior off the top of my head (had online training on these feeds last week), but they are very, very minor.
I did note that the feed rate of the Grass Advantage was slightly higher than the balancer I currently feed (not PE). I have an extensive training coming up in August, and will know more specifics after that.
