PSA Re: smoke detectors and cold

I’ve been looking into changing my security/ fire alarm system to one of the newer, much less expensive ones that are self-installed. Turns out they only provide smoke detectors, not heat detectors.

Smoke detectors do not work under 32 degrees Fahrenheit! So if you live in the northern part of the US where it can get lots colder than that, smoke detectors in your garages, where equipment is stored, even your unheated barn or hay loft won’t work until a fire has a head start. The only fire notification equipment that will work in those kinds of areas are heat detectors.

I’m disappointed that’ll I’ll have to stay with the more expensive company, but that is just not a risk I’m willing to take. YMMV
