PSA- Rustoelum Neverwet is FABULOUS!!

Every year, someone comes out and asks the question, “how do I waterproof my blankets…reliably?” Well, I tried this stuff last year, and it worked a treat. So, I am back at it, re-proofing a stack of blankets.

The product is available at TSC, and is a two step process (two cans in box). Obviously, it needs to be applied in warmer weather. You need a clean blanket, and time to apply both steps. It is usually $19.99 at TSC, but I got it on sale for $14.99, and bought a bunch.

One box will easily do three big blankets. YMMV.

Just passing it along…

I had been wondering about this. Thank you for the review

BUMP…
Ok, ASB, I really (!) need you to reply back…
#1) this product speaks of detergents removing the waterproofing. SO, IF I have ‘before hand’ washed said turnout with a detergent, rinsed it really well, and then let it dry, will this product adhere and be waterproof?
and
#2) Do you then reapply? this product once/after you’ve used the blanket for a time/season and once so dirty you must wash, it all washes out?

#3) do you find any ‘non breatheable’ issues with this product?

I am literally washing blankets now, and will be anxious for your answers!

thanks sooooooo much!

so weird? once replied to? why doesn’t this go to top of the forum?

I’m guessing not that many folks have tried it. I’ve done Nikwax, and all of the other stuff, and this beats them all, hands down. Kept my blankets proofed all last winter, without one fail. And it was one badass winter!

I do not know if you can wash the blankets with detergent, and have them stay proofed. I generally wash mine in water, only, and just do an extra rinse if they are nasty- and it seems to work. I re-proof every year, because the idea of getting into the middle of winter, and having a fail mortifies me.

The blankets still seemed waterproof when I washed them and re-did them- see above, as to why…

I do not have any new blankets, that would be breathable- a bunch of Rambo Wugs, and a few Pessoas. I opt for waterproof, over breathable, because I blanket in layers, and never let them get too warm, or too cold. It is a pain doing the on/off thing, but not so hard with just a couple to do.

Thanks, ASB! … It was weird. maybe? my computer was running updates or something? but I’d enter a response, and it would show IF I scrolled back two pages…but it wasn’t coming up as advancing to the day’s post. Anyway. it is now (!) and I thank you for the input. I’ll try this and know that I should only wash in cold water rinses, but still re apply afterwards.
