Stewart: . Also the proper name for a certain pattern of plaid. ;)[/QUOTE]
āStewartā is the name of a Scottish clan. The clan originally got its name because they were stewards to the Scottish kings. But they later became kings themselves, sometimes spelling their name Stuart.
Like most Scottish clans, they have one or more patterns (called tartans) of woven cloth named after them. Royal Stewart, hunting Stewart, Stuart, etc.
A plaid is NOT a pattern. A plaid is a large piece of (usually tartan) cloth worn as a cloak.
The word āplaidā is misused more often than it is used correctly, but since this is a PSA about word usage, I have to bring it up.
The word for the pattern is a ātartanā.
