I would never have thought I’d be the one sitting here writing this but I wanted to take the time to warn others and hopefully avoid the damage/vet bills we’re working with.
I am a long time user of Bigeoil liniment in both liquid and gel form. I ran out of my most recent bottle and as a results when I was at the local tack shop picked up a bottle of the Vetrolin to replace the Bigeoil.
My palomino, Max, was doing really well but as we’re still not many months away from when he was dead fit I wanted to give him some type of relief after harder rides. So I used this product a total of 3 times on him. I used it on Gin 2 times in the same 8 day time frame. On Max I only put it on the fronts and not that thickly. On Gin I did fronts and hinds and once wiped it over his stifles.
Short version of a long story… it blistered the hell out of Max’s rf. Gin also has faint signs on blistering on his right hind stifle.
I did start googling about this after the fact and saw a post on here from 2011. It’s a known thing apparently. Also more frightening is on Google Reviews and Smart Pak reviews it shows that many people had reactions on their own hands and were breaking out with rashes and other allergic responses.
The good news is that they both will be fine. In Max’s case ironically it may help him as he’s developed a green splint under a spot he hit himself (or Gin did) in the field. So a response of more increased circulation may aid in his recovery. (This was my vet and my’s thought after the splint was diagnosed on xray) It’s pretty darn upgly now and I will try to add pics to this thread later so you can see what Max’s leg looks like. Gin’s stifle was very minor and he’s already cleared up though he’s still touchy in the area.
I’m not sure what, if any, response I will have to the company. I will point out that being a grey and a palomino that both are light skinned guys and that may have played a role.
I just wanted to warn others.
