PSSM 1 / ALCAR/ l carnitine/no fat,some fat ,more fat

Please, has anybody ever gotten an explanation as to WHY , if you feed ALCAR to pssm horse you should not feed fat. And if you feed fat, you might want to feed l carnitine. Mostly though why ALCAR with no or very low fat??? Is it dangerous to horse? Is there something about ALCAR that blocks fat use, or fat that blocks ALCAR use? Everything I have read about the two leads me to believe not so. In fact, when one is fed, you also end up with additional amounts of other. Also, while I am at it, any bad reactions to ALCAR ? Thank you for your responses.

Where are you getting this advice? I googled and found nothing about it on reputable sites. Can you link to your source?

From what I read it’s a protein metabolized out of lysine and helps the body use fat.

My leptin-resistant horse has had ALCAR supplementation for 8 years and I have never read this nor heard it from my vet.

What is your source?

Since you ask, my horse has not had any side effects attributed to his ALCAR.

We definitely need to see what you’ve been reading

Thank you for your replies. I think I have figured out the answer but ForagePlusTalk was one source of “if you feed ALCAR do not feed high fat to PSSM horse”
Renn aissance, I do understand why a leptin resistant horse would benefit from ALCAR.
Being very basic, what I have learned is that acetyl l carnitine favors glucose metabolism, l carnitine favors using fat. It really is a bit more complicated, however, for my purposes this is what matters
I am learning that what tweaks one pssm horses diet favorably, can be disastrous for another horse. Quite frustrating For our horse, a bit of fat on top of low nsc diet was working better than we could have imagined…until it wasn’t A bit more fat- no better. Had I known of ALCAR working for some horses, I might have tried it first because it is easier. So tried it without fat, horse was more aware but physically went downhill. Back to adding fat, and will add l carnitine to see if that was the missing ingredient. Vitamin E, Selenium, magnesium have all been there through this therapy.
