Prolific producer of consistent and high end winners. She is a household name in the Thoroughbred world right now. But I think reviewing her pedigree is extremely interesting. I enjoy looking at pedigrees and what was produced along the line.
She is sired by Derby & Preakness winner Big Brown and out of a mare sired by Silver Ghost. Puca herself was 2nd in the G2 Gazelle and won the Steve Pini Memorial Stakes.
Big Brown was an Eclipse winning three year old, entering stud at Three Chimneys and later going to Irish Hill and Dutchess View in NY before being pensioned last year to Old Friends. He produced some big winners like Dortmund. SomeLikeItHotBrown, Kiss To Remember, Funny Guy, etc but for the most part he fell out of demand in the industry.
Her dam, Boat’s Ghost, only made 6 starts at 25k. She is a black type producer with her most recent offspring being a filly by Hard Spun born in 2024 and Ragin Bull filly born in 2023. While producing Puca, her most notable offspring is the great Finnegan’s Wake who spent his stud career in California before being moved to Wolpaw Stables in Wyoming in 2025.
Boat’s Ghost pedigree is a bit old school. Her sire, Silver Ghost, spent his career at Lanes End but was notoriously mean. He was sired by Mr Prospector and out of the Halo mare Misty Galore. Misty Galore was a Virginia based broodmare and also a graded stakes winner: she goes back to Courbette (By Native Dancer) who is behind Gun Runner and Saint Liam.
Boat’s Ghost was out of Rocktheboat who was sired by Summer Squall and out of the mare Native Boat, sired by Native Royalty. RocktheBoat had 20 starts and 40k in earnings but she didn’t produce anything noteworthy.
If you go straight back in Puca’s maternal line; the mare Castle Ridge produced Secretaridge (By Secretariat) who was a stakes winner and producer of Chicago Six who was a graded stakes winner who stood at HIll N Dales’ Illinois farm.
Style only won 4k on the track but produced Gay Style who was a graded stakes winner and dam of Ladanum who was also a graded stakes winner. She also produced Ivory Hunter who was second in the Kelso, the Belmont JOckey Club Gold Cup, and the Hialeah and stood at stud in NZ.
Capelet produced Traffic who won the Hopeful and was also a graded stakes placed horse who went on to be a leading sire in France and Japan
Quick Touch produced Count Amber who won the Narragansett and was 2nd in the Withers and Travers. Count Amber sired Amberoid who won the Belmont, the Wood. Quick Touch also produced Quill who won the Mother Goose, The Acorn, and was Champion 2yo filly. Quill was the dam of One for All who was the 1970 Canadian Turf Champion and stood at Jonabell. She was also the dam of Caucasus who Won the Irish St Leger, Sunset Handicap, San Luis Handicap, the Manhatten, etc.
Bonus produced Twenty Grand who won the Derby and the Belmont as well as the Wood Memorial. Twenty Grand was a 1957 Hall of Fae innductee and the 1931 Horse of the Year.
Rememberance produced Stars and Bars who won the Clark for Greentree as well as the stallion Token.
Forget produced Borrow who had a big record in England before coming to America to win the Saratoga Handicap, The Prince George and the Brooklyn. Borrow raced for 10 years and was a gelding.
