My mare pulled her shoe and I’m just getting ready to turnout for the night and I’m not sure if I should wrap it or let it be? I’m only hesitant to wrap because there’s a huge puddle by the gate and her water trough, so I feel like her foot is going to get wet and I don’t know if it being wrapped is bad for bacteria and moisture. But I also worry about her getting sore because she’s prone to abscesses and that particular hoof kind of pancakes and her heels are very low to the ground.
I would probably skip turnout for a horse prone to abscessing and with very flat feet. A boot might work but is also tough with a big puddle.
If your pastures are rocky and/or she is ouchy I would probably skip turnout as well unless you have a hoof boot. If that is not an option, I personally would wrap with magic cushion or a poultice pad as long as you will be able to c
check on it/redo it in the morning (or this evening). I have had hoof wraps last overnight in turnout but I do usually redo them right before bed.
For the future, I would invest in atleast one hoof boot that works for turnout. I have Cavallo Treks for my TB who lives outside and has super sensitive feet and thin soles. He will go from totally lame after pulling a shoe to 100% sound with the boot on.
I would not turn your horse out if she has feet as described without a boot. It doesn’t take long to damage the hoof wall to the point where there’s nothing to nail to. A friend just went through this and ended up with glue ons. Her eyes when she found out how much that was going to cost!
My process for a pulled shoe is to rasp the edges of the foot. Then I use vet wrap covered by elasticon. Then I boot. Then the horse goes out. Our farriers have always been thankful for that process.
We use easyboots and have at least one in every size we need.
I would not wrap and I would go ahead and turn out my own mare who also has iffy hooves.
But that is based on my farm’s pasture footing. I’m on a coastal plain with sandy soil and not a rock or stone to be seen.
What is your turnout footing? Without that important information advice will be all over the place.
