Pullman, Washington?

Fearless Friends,
Anyone know anything about the Pullman, Washington area? It is near Moscow, Idaho, too. My son has an interview with Washington State University. What is the area like? You know there is a TB foxhunter that goes with him.

What do you want to know? Pullman is pretty isolated, and there is no hunt on that side of the state (the only hunt in WA is on the Westside, located on Ft. Lewis-McChord south of Seattle.).

The land is rolling wheat country, but around Moscow it becomes forested, and quite hilly (pine/fir forest). The climate is dry, summers are hot and winters are cold and often snowy, but it is the dry “high desert” climate so quite comfortable.

There is a small, but active Pony Club and Event community, and Montana is a short drive away (Rebecca Farms!!). There is a small recognized event just south of Moscow, in Deary, ID.

WSU has a polo team, as well. Boarding is sometimes hard to find, if you have certain quality standards. Not many places, but a bit of searching will find you a nice place.

Hay is easy to get, and quite affordable. Lots of Western opportunities as well, some big QH/Paint farms in the area as well.

You are 4-5 hours from Seattle, about 6 from Portland, OR in Pullman. Only 1.5 from Spokane, WA.

Hope that helps.

The only place I found on the net was Serenity Farms. Do you know it or have other suggestions?

Pullman does sound like it it might be close enough for you and him to ride together sometime. 1 1/2 hour is local out there I assume…

I’m not as dialed in on that area as I used to be. I live about a half an hour from Portland, OR, so I’m not close.

I know Amchara, who posts on here, is a student at WSU right now, she might have some info.

I’d post on Off Course and ask for some info. Or do a search, as I think there was a thread about Pullman a while ago.

Pullman is beautiful, and I loved riding around the wheat and lentil fields when I was there. I worked at a stable in Moscow when I was a student there, it was VERY nice, but I can’t think of the name–it was private, but had outside boarders. Try to find the name of a feed store in the area and give them a call. They’d know the boarding situation.

we moved to pullman from alabama a few years ago and after visiting there and seeing the conditions of the few stables that they had to offer… i unfortunately sold my hunt horse. i could not on good conscience take him from a place that had grass and a stall and a pasture to a place with no turnout. almost none of the stables there offer any turnout since land is all used for lentils and wheat and hay. the place on the moscow pullman highway is a DUMP! the conditions of the other place in moscow that i went to was terrible as well(not sure of the name-big metal grey barn) wire fencing that was coming down. and it is all very expensive for the conditions. there was a nice looking place headed south on the left headed towards lewiston but i never saw it till i got there. i think they do dressage. i did not like pullman at all, and was glad to leave. but i am a southern girl. i hope he there are other people here who have more to offer!
i would not expect to foxhunt while out there. no place within any driving distance that is practical-except seattle. but that is pretty far!
good luck! we are glad to be back in the south!

sorry can’t offer much advice, but GO Cougs!
I am an alumn, but unfortunately was not into riding while there.

Looking at WSU’s website, I found that they have an intercollegiate team and their email is equestrian@wsu.edu. I think that would be a great place to find out more information about riding in the Pullman area.

Don’t know much about Pullman other than that’s where WSU is, and wheat… lots of wheat.

There’s an up and coming hunt located in Dillon, MT(Currently working on becoming registered with the MFHA)… but that’s an over 6 hour drive. Though it would be worth it for a special trip. =D

If anyone needs info on Pullman still please let me know! I agree with the other posters who said boarding a horse here sucks!!!

Is there any safe place for a nice horse? With a vet school, I didn’t think it would be so hard to find competent people and barns.

It’s damn near impossible… Ask Amchara, I think she will agree…
