Pumpking for dog diarrhea.. how much? How long?

Yes, I know, vet checkk to rule out something more serious.
Yes, I know, no blood, starry stool, excessive mucous.

Can someone share their experiences giving canned pure pumpkin in their dog’s food?
How much did you give, and how large was the dog?
How long before you saw results?
Were they dramatic, or just a moderate improvement?
How long did you continue to give pumpkin?

Thanks for the advice…

Pumpkin is to add more fiber, aka loosen stool or bulk up stool (more volume). Feed cooked white rice to tighten up stool. Or Metamucil for older dogs who have perennially soft stools.

I keep it on hand at all times. How I use it and how long depends upon the situation. If the diarrhea is really bad I don’t feed them anything for at least 12 hours, sometimes longer. If it is just a little loose I add a few teaspoons to tablespoons depending upon size of the dog to their regular food. If I have been withholding food I do the same except add it to some chicken and rice. I don’t think you can give them too much so exact amounts aren’t really important. If I have any left over I freeze it in tablespoon size blobs for later use.

Thank you.
Anyone else?

Similar to the previous poster.
When I got my 90lb Aussie x Bernese she had chronic loose stools. Fecal was tested and came back normal, tried several different foods and nothing helped.

Started giving her a couple heaping tablespoons twice a day with her food and her stools firmed right up. I fed the pumpkin for about two months and then happened to run out, stools stayed firm so I stopped feeding it.

Recently she she had a bout of liquid diarrhea so I withheld food for 12 or so hours, then gradually introduced small amounts of her regular kibble with lots of pumpkin. Once she felt better I phased out the pumpkin again.

For my cocker abut 1 1/ 2 heaping tablespoons. For my larger dogs (60 lbs+) about 3 heaping tablespoons. Pretty hard to give too much.

My 20 lb Cavaliers eat pumpkin every day. A heaping teaspoon each. Started to try to avoid more of the anal gland issues one had. Have continued with no problems. They like it and it provides more food without a lot of calories.

Our Corgis get it every other day. One big tablespoon with 1/2 cup of dry food. They weigh about 28 lbs

Sswor did not ignore your questions. They felt that pumpkin is more a thing to give when your dog is constipated rather than having diarrhea because it is very fibrous. She offered up options for a dog with diarrhea. So I’m sure you appreciate her advice.

I feed it almost every feed right now to my rescue. He is around 90 lbs but should be 5-10 heavier. He was on bad kibble for 3 years and now is on raw. His teeth, coat etc improved the first week but he has been intermittently constipated and then has diarrhea. Then normal for a few days etc etc. With him I think it is also stress related but the pumpkin helps for both his issues until we can get him adjusted/settled.

I feed him around 1-2 heaping tablespoons per meal (X2). He is a hard keeping dog and is eating around 3lbs of food/day.

I would say results are usually evident by the next day. If I had a case of no results by next day and the issue was diarrhea I would fast for a day then start him back on a small amount of pumpkin with some rice.

I feed it to my cockers, and it’s great for when their stools are too loose or too hard. When their poop is mostly orange, I withhold for a couple of days. When my female gets a little stressed, her stools get a little loose, I give her a little more. Stool firms up by the second BM after the pumpkin. As others have said, there’s no real amount. I give a splotch. So two cockers, fed twice a day, a small can lasts 2 - 2 1/2 days.

When my female was on exercise restrictions for a torn CCL, I cut way back on her food, and upped her pumpkin. I needed to cut back on her calories, but I needed to keep up her food volume.

Agree with Sswor’s advice. IME pumpkin can help firm up slightly loose stools (it works best as as a daily supplement vs. a one time quick fix) but it can make very loose stools/diarrhea significantly worse. Feeding too much of it can make it significantly worse.

If my dog is having actual liquid diarrhea I fast then do boiled chicken and rice the next 2-3 meals.
