Really basic question.
I’ve never had a Wintec saddle before and now I do.
Love it but the “leathers” are too long.
Can I punch additional holes in them just as I would regular leather ones?
TIA!

I’ve never actually done it, but if I needed to, I’d probably heat a thick, 3" nail and pound it through the biothane (synthetic leather.) That works really well with haters because it slightly melts the plastic, sealing the edges. If you have webbers with the little t-shaped pieces, this probably won’t work, and I’d just buy a set of shorter leathers.
I would use a drill with an appropriately-sized bit.
My mom heated up a nail and poked it through. It worked pretty well.
I took mine to a shoe repair guy; just explain very carefully that the holes need to match on both leathers. Also, the white stuffing will come out, but that’s ok if they’re not on your show saddle.
I’ve done it before, but I had to use a Herm Sprenger hole punch to do so. It’s tough, but can be done. Honestly, it’s cheaper and easier to buy shorter webbers.
biothane/nylon the easiest thing to do is get a power drill and just drill a hole, then pass a hot nail through the hole to open it/seal the edges.
HI. I just purchased a wintec western saddle and I also need to punch an extra hole. My question, tho, is what do you do with all the excess stirrup “leather” at the bottom? Generally it wraps around the stirrup on the inside. With my new WIntec it would be on the outside. That can’t be right. How does it work? Thanks!
I use a punch. Hammer the punch and l get a beautiful hole without any tears
I use my best leather punch. I put the punch handles in a bench vise, and crank the vise closed to push the leather punch handles together until the Webber is punched through. We (my family) have owned four Wintecs in our riding lives, and I found the Webbers way harder to punch through than just about anything other than those old Stubben triple-laminated leathers. But the extra force using a vise on the leather punch handles does the trick.
Sorry, I just saw this is a resurrected thread that had been dormant for 12 years!
