Puppy & Chicken Thread #497

Rainbow had her last round of puppy shots today. She’s now 16 weeks and “only” 34 lbs. Had to play with the calculators again and they have her topping out somewhere between 75-110 lbs depending on which one you use.

Not to be forgotten, the chicks are 7 weeks. Mom washed her hands (er… wings? Feet?) of them about a week ago and started laying again, so they are navigating life with the flock on their own.

Aw, you got a pair!

Mr. Eenie (my son named them Tiny and Eenie) better grow up to be nice. Life is too short to own mean roosters. Our last fellow (named Maricia by my nephew as a “pullet” chick) was headed for freezer camp before someone locally wanted him for breeding. Pretty sure he still ended up at freezer camp because I haven’t seen her advertising the cross she wanted him for.

My Barred cockerel for one line is a bit of a jerk, I’m really hoping he grows out of it because he’s kinda all I have for that pen. I don’t typically have trouble with the Barred, and his sire was a super nice guy, it’s weird. Bad actors come to dinner here though, life’s too short to deal with being flogged.

I was surprised they are barred. They are just a barnyard mix from someone local. But of all the breeds she has (she’s constantly changing things up and buying/selling new stuff), I didn’t see anything barred in her flock. :woman_shrugging:

White can cover it, I know

I sent off an Embark DNA test for her. There was an Amazon Prime Day deal on them and it arrived in 1 day.

I don’t care about the breed results since I know what she is. I’m pretty sure both parents were Amish-bred, so there could be a surprise. Dad was definitely GSD-type and mom looked the part for a bernedoodle, so if it deviates too much from that, you know something is wrong.

But I’m really interested in the health stuff, especially since she’s a big dog from parents that weren’t really breeding stock.

Little Eenie thinks he’s a big boy now…

He’s been practicing with baby crows and gurgles for a couple weeks, but this morning was the first time I heard him get it down. He’s only 10 weeks! He’s terrified of me, will not interact with me at all; his “sister” at least tolerates my presence. Hoping this means he’ll be too much of a weenie to get really aggressive.

Look whose Embark results came back:

I didn’t do it for the breed testing, since I met her parents, but it does increase my confidence in the results.

This is what I really cared about:

And this:

Although OMG how bad would her shedding be without carrying the furnishings trait because my house is covered in black hairballs.

This was interesting… I hope they are right! Although she’s close to that weight now. She has to be pushing 50lbs.

Since it has been ages since I had a puppy…

Is the 20+ weeks period just hell? Don’t get me wrong, she is a very good pup. But it’s been a lot of “La La La I don’t have to listen to you…”

Photo for tax.

YES. 6 months ish is absolutely when they start exploring “…but what happens if I DON’T?”

It’s soooooooooo fun. (Not!)

LOL! what a cutie. She will be HUGE!
My pup is the same age as yours and weighs a whooping…5.5 lbs!! Hahaha! But she has a shark mouth and we’re learning that NO does mean no…and she is actually doing better with recall and such, now.
Not quite fully house trained yet, but she at least knows to go outside (back door’s always open in good weather) and rarely has accidents anymore. I never did crate her.
She also loves learning new tricks!

OMG. What is she (besides adorable)?

Rainbow is not super interested in new tricks at the moment. :woman_shrugging: I feel like we are in a little bit of a rut in that sense.

She is doing well with house-training; she had an accident yesterday out of the blue for no clear reason, but accidents are very far between. She is doing well with loose leash walking/heel. Although recall kind of went out the window lately if there is anything “better” to distract her.

She’s still a velociraptor with those puppy teeth. As she gets bigger, it’s becoming less tolerable. Her instructor gave us some activities which work in training sessions but if she is loose and doing her own thing it’s mouth mouth mouth on everything.

I weighed her this morning- 48lbs! That 62lb prediction from Embark is looking pretty hilarious.
