Purina Feed choices

So for many reasons I had to stop feeding Triple Crown feed about six months ago. Since then I’ve used a local brand that was easy to get. After this I still want to change my mare to a different grain. Since I have a very limited local selection and can’t afford to go too expensive I have narrowed it down to two choices. I’m looking at either the Purina Omlene 100 or the Purina Healthy Edge. Does any one use either of these? Which would you think is better?

I would vote for the Healthy Edge, I had a barn full of horses on it at one point, and they all looked fabulous! I hated to no longer be able to get TC, but I was pleasantly surprised by how great the horses looked on the HE. It’s a heavier grain, and IIRC a regular 3qt feed scoop is about 3lbs. The smaller
ponies/easy keepers also looked great when supplemented with the the Enrich ration balancer.

What kind of work is she doing, or more generally, how much feed does she need on top of her hay/pasture?

I’d probably pick the Healthy Edge over the Omolene 100; it’s a little nutritionally denser and lower NSC. However, if she’s an easy keeper, you would get more nutrition for your dollar with the Enrich Plus.

She’s just starting back after some time off. One of the reasons for the grain change. She’s one of the hardest keepers I’ve ever had to deal with. She gets free choice hay, alfalfa, alfalfa cubes and grain and is still hard to keep weight on.

The HE Is a vastly better product than O100

Ultium would be better for her description. But have you made sure you’ve adequately addressed teeth, ulcers, and worms?

You might look into the senior active if she’s a hard keeper. Very similar to Triple Crown Senior.

Also, the amplify fat supplement works great too.

Yes I’ve had her for years and she’s always been a hard keeper. Teeth done every year. Worked on a regular schedule and has regularly been checked for ulcers and has none. Thanks for the recommendations.

Since you have access to both of those feeds I am assuming you have access to the rest of the Purina line? I would highly recommend Purina Senior Active. It was what I had my mare on (along with some rice bran) after she got put back into work and she put weight on very nicely. It should be available at any TSC store.

Senior Active is the only thing that keeps weight on my old gal.
