Opinions on or experiences with these two feeds please?
The Strategy line of feeds is one that continues to elude me in terms of why there seems to be such a black and white scenario with them - horses either do really well, or not well at all, on any of them.
I’m not a fan of Purina in general to start - the Enrich, and the Ultium feeds are the exceptions. It’s not that I’m a true fan of them, but they are more than acceptable IMHO if Purina is what’s available.
OTOH Tribute as a whole is a better line of products. The KNE is a very nice product. So with all that, KNE hands down, if these are the only 2 choices.
What are the horse’s stats?
Senior arab gelding and mare…in good weight and no dental issues.
Good weight on what sort of diet?
I haven’t been a fan of Purina, especially after i learned from a person in the know that they get their fat/oil from fryer vats at local places like the Detroit Metro Airport. ew…
I have been using Kalm N Ez for over 3 years and love it. I have a wide range of horses on it ages 10-26. In varying levels of work… full work (10 yr old OTTB) to full on retirement ( 25 DWB and 26 OTTB) I also soak all the grain because 1 out the 5 has a history of severe choke. And in the winter i love doing that because its like every meal is a warm mash and I feel like it helps get water in them year round.
I feed about 4 lbs a day between 2 feedings. I also throw in a cup of Essential K sort of as a vitamin mineral top dressing… more economical than vitamins for 4 horses. they all get quality home grown hay which is an alfalfa/grass mix.
on a side note… i highly recommend weighing the feed it is very dense and i was surprised at how little grain i actually feed for the results. ( 2lbs is about 1/2-3/4 of a 2qt scoop)
All my horses are in good weight. My two easy keepers get about 2 lbs a day, only because I feel bad when i look in their feed buckets and see anything smaller and i know it will help get additional supplements in them.
Overall I have been super happy with the results. My only recommendation is be sure you buy it from a dealer that has a lot of turn over. I live in a very rural area, where unfortunately it seems most owners are not usually into paying as much for feed… more a sweet feed, back yard type crowd. So I have found some feed stores don’t seem to turn over the feed as often, while i have never had a bad bag… i have had some that were just not as fresh as i have been use to. didn’t use that store again… wasn’t worth the $1.00 a bag savings in my eyes.
In comparing the two feed tags it seems like the Healthy Edge has a more natural, simple formula. The Tribute Kalm N EZ has a lot of ingredients…and artificial “stuff”… has anybody actually noticed their horse being much quieter on the Kalm N EZ?
Do you have the ingredient list for the HE?
I’m not sure if your comment is based on the GA, which is very abbreviated in the online literature I find for the HE. The KNE has a much more comprehensive GA, as well as the ingredient list.
I promise the full GA of the HE is not nearly as limited as what’s online
I’d feed Tribute over anything, they’re a phenomenal company. My horse got KNE for years before I moved out to the PNW and couldn’t get it anymore, switched to Triple Crown now.
I know too many people who have severe issues with Purina to ever feed a horse (or dog!) their products.
My horse seems to be the exception. She was wacko crazy on Kalm and Easy, within days. Switched her back to Healthy Edge, and within a day or so she was back to her normal alert but compliant self.
My elderly Arab, who is usually a hard keeper especially in the winter, has bloomed on Kalm N EZ. For several years he’s been getting TC Sr. (Cushings, so low starch/sugar) but always needed a fat supplement in the colder weather. It’s also soaked and he’s been eating it up; he boycotted TC Sr. a few months ago. I wish it was lower in sugar and starch but my BO has an easier time getting Tribute feeds. And there’s no chipping away at it in the cold weather.
The other horses in the barn get Essential K, EZ Kalm Ultra and their senior feed and all look good.
I have a 33 YO donkey that started to loose weight bad last winter. No molars left (you can actually hear his gums squeaking when he chews). Vet came out and suggested Tribute Kalm Ultra for him. This stuff is AMAZING, he has gained all is weight back (and even has a neck fat roll showing back up) and is keeping it even with winter upon us. I am switching my 23 yo gelding to it from HE also. Even drove 50 miles each way last weekend when my regular feed store ran out.
