Purina Omega Match Ration Balancer

@luvmyhackney created a topic about this new ration balancer in off topic. I, too, am curious about it, so I thought I’d add a post here. It has no iron added and is timothy based w no corn, soy or alfalfa. Has anyone tried it? Thx, NH
And thank you, luvmyhackney, for posting about it in the first place!

Yep, ferrous-anything is iron

This is a really new product so hardly anyone has used it, and nobody has used it for long enough to really say it’s great or bad.

But I guarantee some will love it and some won’t - same with every product out there

It IS potentially a great balancer option for horses who are not on much or any grass, and that’s its entire market.

In the only place I’ve seen a price for it - mid-west area, it was in the $45 range which would make it a big fat NO for me. You can add lots of Omega 3 for way cheaper than that on top of a regular balancer

@JB it also has Outlast in it, so that makes the price seem more reasonable. If someone is currently feeding flax and Outlast it would probably be cheaper than buying the supplements separately. At $45.00 a bag, though, I wouldn’t feed it unless I had a horse that needed both supplements.

Many of their feeds now contain Outlast, but the price didn’t jump dramatically :frowning:
And the price I know it just one location, which may be an inflated price. I don’t know the average price

The product website states that 2 pounds of the Omega Match Balancer provides one “serving” (presumably 200 grams) of Outlast. So, you’d still need to provide an additional 2-3 servings of Outlast per day to match the recommended feeding rate. Just FYI.

Well that’s interesting. And a bit misleading on their part, I think. Always read the fine print.

I answered the other thread too but I’m super excited about this product and I’ve switched all my guys to it. I don’t think the price point seems bad at all. I was feeding 1 lb of senior plus flax, vitamins and Outlast. I will check back in on how it goes after they have been on it a while

I didn’t check the ingredient list just the nutritional list, I didn’t see iron values listed. Should have scrolled further to see the iron addition. Additional iron is not a deal breaker, I have a filtration system on the water system and feed copper/zinc/Vitamin E already. So his intake is fairly low anyway.

I like the fact it has no soy or corn. My gelding has a corn allergy and I swear he has Cushing’s even though his blood work comes back fine 2x a year.

Pricing from my feed store is:
$32.00 Enrich Plus - 50 lbs
$35.00 Purina Omega Match Ration Balancer - 50 lbs
$26.00 Legends Ration Balancer - 40 lbs
$32.00 Triple Crown 30% and $25.00 for Lite

Only brand that his is picky with is Triple Crown. He’s a 600 lb pony that eats a lb a day so not a massive increase to my budget.

I think I’m going to make the switch. I’ll report back.

what is your cost, and what state are you in?

That’s so good to see! That’s on par with many other good balancers. I had a feeling that the $45-ish price from the mid-West was a regional inflation

It’s $47- I’m in a big time horse area in MD

just for price comparison-wise
I’m paying $29 for Ultium, $23 for Purina Senior, $50/ #50 whole flax

I had a coupon for $5 off a bag but I am happy with the Enrich Plus and I wondered how expensive it was . I just paid $ 30 for Enrich Plus last week so I am guessing $35 is around the price here too, if my dealer has it yet.

Wow, that sounds like dealers taking advantage of people :frowning:

Just part of living here. At least I don’t have to pay CA or FL hay prices

This! IMHO, the Outlast added is a bit of a joke. There isn’t enough of it in any of their Outlast added feeds to make it worthwhile. When we did the math, we didn’t have a single horse eating enough to get 2 full Outlast servings per day, much less the 3-4 needed. Some weren’t even eating enough per day to get one full serving.

Thank you!

A lot of horses benefit from a serving of Outlast (200gm for the average horse) before work, and don’t need any more.

The Purina feeds that contain Outlast contain a full serving in the minimally recommended amount of the feed. That’s 4lb for Ultium Gastric Care, for example.

So if you aren’t getting even a full serving a day, you’re not feeding at least the minimally recommended amount of the actual feed
