put your weather rants here!

We are hitting the end of week two of brutal cold and extreme cold warnings. Sun is out but that brings little comfort when the wind chill is more than -40 (don’t worry, -40 is the same on both scales). They say we are going to reach a high of 0°F, the warmest it has been in two weeks. Yard is FULL of whiteshit, and the tractor won’t start - all it does is make that disgruntled whine of a too cold diesel engine. Long range forecast is at least another week of this crap - they seem to leave the -8°C temp at the last day of the seven day forecast and just leave it there whilst advancing the days in the little boxes.

It’s damned scary when the temps at such exotic northern towns like Inuvik, Whitehorse and Yellowknife are warmer than here. Those places are north of 60° latitude - WTF???

I have eight gloves – four right, four left, none match.

Love the way the radio and even NOAA start hyping the Wind Chill Factor as if it was the actual temperature; they DO know WCF only matters if you’re naked and soaking wet, right?

Keeping exposed skin covered in extreme cold USED to be, like, DUH.[/QUOTE]

Please come visit Canada and then give us your opinion on the wind chill factor, or, as our Weather Network now calls it, the “Feels Like Temperature”.

It matters, it matters a lot. It matters enough to make dying of hypothermia one hell of a whole lot quicker.

Holy F— it’s cold.

that is all

That special moment when you get all your layers properly arranged and THEN you have to pee…

Just came in from a ‘shopping trip’ - brought in paper towels, frozen bread, a frozen chicken parmesan and dry cat food from the truck (who needs a freezer in this weather?). It doesn’t feel as cold as the thermometer reads. not that it isn’t damned cold, but not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

The weather bulletin that popped up on my phone a few moments ago told me there is a severe wind warning for my area tonight and into tomorrow morning. Wind chill maxing out at -40F.

THAT’S NEGATIVE FORTY FRIGGIN’ DEGREES.

Welcome to Vermont, also know as “New Arctic”.

Argh, -30 F wind chills at the barn tonight into tomorrow. I just hope my fool horse is smart enough to stay in her shed. She has good blankets and is quite fuzzy otherwise.

2F tonight with wind chill below zero. Took extra hay to the horses, filled the water tubs to the top, checked everyone over, and noted that they were at the very top of the pasture…in the wind…both a.m. and p.m. I’m sure they would roll in the mud if it wasn’t frozen.
All 4 yahoo’ed down the hill when it was time for dinner.

What you have in Canada is seriously nasty; around the NYC area, any time the temp. goes below 35 it’s a “major weather event” and considered idiot-threatening. You couldn’t PAY me to live where you get -40 etc!

Yes, wind chill matters, whether you’re naked and soaking wet or not. Not sure why you think it doesn’t. The wind cuts right through you. One of the mares was laying out in the snow the other night, it was -11. She won’t do that at warmer temps with a colder wind chill. And it’s not because she dislikes wind, because she stands out in wind, rain, sleet crap weather.

-30c here, brutal cold. Can’t believe it was this temp for pretty much all of last winter, and that I survived! Have to get up early to do chores when I can wear the toque and not mess my hair before work!

All of my external faucets are frozen (both those on the house and in the barn) so I’m carrying 5 gallon buckets from the kitchen sink in a sled to water the horses and chickens. And the snow drifts are up to my knees.

On the bright size, frozen poops are so easy to pick in the stalls.

I think I’m on the Ice Planet Hoth.

I have a 3M n95-rated “painters” mask that I wear when it gets too cold.
Dry extreme cold brings on asthma.
The mask retains the moisture you expel and keeps the air you breath in warm.

Scarves, or furs wrapped around my nose don’t work, as breathing deeply into them induce asthma.
Costs about $4 but it’s really helpful in keeping you warm and the air moisture level high enough.

My horse insists that bran mash (with his meds in it) tastes better dumped in the snow. So much for making sure you eat all of your white pills.

This morning it has warmed up to -16C(4F) and it feels rather pleasant compared to yesterday. Windchills -26C(-15F) is a walk in the park compared to yesterday’s -37

It’s the coldest day we’ve had that I can remember here in GA. 13 degrees outside and 50 degrees inside my house because THE FREAKING HEATER WENT OUT.

Oh and a pipe definitely froze last night. Not sure how bad the damage will be as it doesn’t look like it will be able to thaw for quite some time.

I’m so freaking cold right now.

I had to take a break from AM chores because I seriously can’t feel my fingers, probably because I got frostbite as a kid. Somewhere around here I have good ski mittens, but of course I can’t find them so I’m layering lesser cheap gloves and mittens. I still have one more stall to clean, ice to break out of 4 more buckets and re-fill, and have bust ice on the big outside tanks. In weather like this I envy people with one horse that they board so they don’t have to screw with chores in miserable weather.

I leaned over the fence to the goat pen this morning to bust a hole in the ice with my handy 2x4. The splatter from the trough froze my coat to the fence.
