Q about child/lead line saddles

I would like to get a tiny saddle so my two year old can sit/be led around on my old mare. I know nothing about kids saddles. If I buy a lead line saddle will it fit a 16 hand mare who wore a medium wide tree? Also I guess I will need a really long girth.

I don’t know if lead line saddles really fit anything all that well. But they weigh next to nothing and a 2 yr old is usually in the 28-34 lb range and doesn’t ride for very long…in all the situations of saddle fit mattering, I don’t think this situation ranks very high. Lead line saddles usually seem to have a wide tree so if it’s too wide I would use a thicker pad and not have a second thought. But yes to a long girth!

I have a Camelot leadline saddle I bought from horseloverz.com, which is basically a knockoff of the Wintec leadline saddle.

It’s more or less a cross between a treeless saddle and a bareback pad…basically gives the kid a place to sit and a handle to hang on to, but it’s soft and flexes to fit pretty much any horse/pony. It’s been awhile since I had it out, but I seem to recall the panels actually velcro-ing on to the saddle, in order so that you can change the channel width.

It’s synthetic, I think it weighs maybe 2 lbs.

I have the Shires leadline saddle for my son. It is synthetic and the panels Velcro on and are completely adjustable. The only issue I found was trying to find a girth that was short enough to fit it so that it was secure because the “billets” are very long and made of nylon- my mare normally wears a 48" and I had to go down to a 40". The saddle is supportive for my little guy and lightweight, although the stirrup bars do stick out a little more than I would like.
