On the search for a trail saddle for a wide backed Qh. Can all you QH people tell me what brand and model you have? Thank you so much!
My propane tank of a QH has had a Dakota, a Bob Marshall treeless and is currently under a Wintec Endurance. The last two worked the best… he loves the WE (it has a wide tree)
It just depends on the horse and what saddle fits, anything in a FQH is a good place to start-try horsesaddleshop.com for browsing.
I have a custom Todd Jey Ranch Cutter. I got it for cowhorse shows, but also trail ride in it.
Are you doing endurance or just trail riding? Is your horse extremely wide? I used to poo poo barrel saddles until I owned a couple. So if you don’t want an endurance saddle, can’t help you with enfurance saddles, a dressage saddle works. I have a M Toulouse Mariann that fits my wide horses great. I had a Cactus barrel saddle for a while until my custom wade was built, but it sill wasn’t wide enough. I found a used Double C Steinhoff trophy barrel saddle and love it! Most comfy little saddle I have ever ridden in, the dressage saddle is #2. I am selling the wade, isn’t comfortable for me at all, but the horse likes it. The Steinhoff is actually their #2 QH tree, but is wider than most FQHB I have tried. I am still considering ordering a new one in the wider tree and slightly bigger seat, we both could use a tiny bit more room or just ride in this one. You get get a basic no frills Steinhoff for less than $1000, or just over if you get pretty stuff on it and their Flex tree. Their saddle has more flair in the shoulder than Cactus or Martin. This is so important for hill work. Just an option.
