Qtr Sheets - Do you ride with them?

Does anyone ride with a quarter sheet in the winter, or use it for warm up or cool down? I used it for selfish reasons last year, my sheet wraps around my legs and kept me warm…

When I was riding my TB mare I used a quarter sheet during all the cooler/cold weather. We had several, depending on how cold or if it was raining. She never got a coat and we
tried to stay outside all winter. Now she’s retired at 30 and my fluffy QH mare needs no such help. In fact, just trace clipped her wooly mammoth locks a few days ago.

Yep. I make my own out of wool from the fabric store or Army surplus blankets. Same thing with my coolout sheets.

Army surplus blankets! Great idea! (Hmmm, I might have to revisit that white trash tack thread. ;))

I actually got the Army surplus wool blanket idea from my veterinarian after she reemed me for not having a wool cover for my horse. So then I got to sewing and made an actual wool horse blanket complete with velcro front closures and elastic leg straps. They’re great.

hey, can you post a pic? That sounds like a less expensive, but the most awesome idea, way to make a quarter sheet!

I will be using mine wrap-around one this year. Gotta keep them thighs from freezing

If I were riding today I’d appreciate one! 30 mile an hour breeze and chilly here in GA.

I usually use a rump rug. I have tried a quarter sheet before, and sometimes it would wrinkle, and just get a little cumbersome for me.

But oooooohhhhh… Army surplus blankets. I can do all sorts of things with those!

Army blankets are definitely grist for the white trash saddle clique. I have been toying with the idea of getting one and making some saddle blankets, since my widewide horse needs a very thinthin pad or she’ll get dry spots even with her humoungous saddle.

Yep, I use one on my horse. I live in Va, and ride as much as winter weather will allow. I keep my mare blanketed to prevent a thick hair coat(she really doesn’t grow very thick). It’s easier for cool out purposes. I often have an evening riding lesson. I have two fleece quarters and one water repellant one that has the cutout to go over riders legs.

So, what are the the pros and cons of quarter sheets vs rump rugs?

I gather that rump rugs can be rolled up behind the saddle if weather conditions change. On the other hand, the right kind of quarter sheet can wrap over the rider’s legs for warmth, which a rump rug can’t do.

What else?

Jeano,
I have maybe four or five of the wool blanket-thickness saddle pads. I bought bulk from Faribualt woolen mills, and had Reinsman cut and trim them for me. They are trimmed and shaped to fit a Tucker saddle. I used them to keep my thicker pads from getting too dirty and having to be washed all the time. Do you have use for them?

I think it is a case of six-of-one-half-dozen-of-the-other. I usually wear a thigh-length coat with winter riding breeches, so it is not an issue for me. I would imagine if I were riding indoors during the winter, I may want a 1/4 sheet for warmup, take it off when I am working hard and getting warm, and out it back on when I am cooling down.

Hay

I don’t use quarter sheets on the trail as where I go, it surely would be ripped off or to shreds…or just absolutely covered in burrs. But I really think they are lovely when in use, especially that new design to resemble the old fashioned design that is yellow, red and black horizontal stripes. Very stylish!

Oh, I LOVE my quarter sheet. Especially for trails. I have a neon pink nylon one that fits right over my fleece one for hunting season. Fat pony does not appreciate pink, but we have not gotten shot so far (knocks on wood).
I got mine for $30 at dover.

Hmmn- mine is also from Dover and it is blue and white fleece. I use it on chilly days as needed, but try to stay out of very brushy areas which would snag on it. Use static guard if needed or watch out!!!

Might could, PM me with dimensions (I have a round skirt abetta trail saddle) and we can discuss a possible transaction and not get banned for buying/selling!

Jeano,
PM Sent!
