Quarter Horse Names

Any ideas for a registered name for a fictional Quarter Horse? He’s a buckskin. I already have a show name and a barn name, but I know nothing about registered names, unless it’s something like Heza Ropin Pony or Ima Gonna Buck or Skippa Nippa Gold. Poco D’Oro? I love QH names, I just can’t seem to make them up!

I once named a fictititious TWH Pride’s Pushover, so I’m open to almost any suggestions, but at least PG-rated ones, please!

No inspiration at present. But since this is fiction I trust you’ll be able to make it better than the average quarter horse registered name. Mine have included Fuerte Nick, Buck Bar Man, Poco Luke Bailey, Skippa Sugar Bo- nothing to write home about there.

Oh, wait. Male. Buckskin. How about He’s Dun Enough? Or to make it more along what some do with the spelling, Hez Dun Enuff. Or maybe Dun Buckin’…no, I should quit now.

Mine apha buckskin little paint markings is gypsys twisted wrench lol. Where’d that come from lol. My friends qh Is reg pa pa pa porky lol woohoo. Do t get the names sometimes but to funny.

How bout ima buckin fool lol. Sounds like one
He’s bucknaked
Get me for a buck

Thanks. I like all those suggestions.

Years ago I saw a dun pony for sale on a UK web site. His name? Duncan. How cool is that.

Dun Buckin Around?

I really like Get Me for a Buck and Hez Dun Enuff

If you can browse through the American Quarter Horse Journal you will be amazed at all of the names. Around here Smart Lil Lena, Peptoboonsmal, High Brow Cat and Peppy Sanbadger are some big names in cow ponies bloodlines. (Disclaimer: I could have screwed any one of those up spelling and otherwise)

My gelding has a horrible registered name it is Sir Quincy’s Iceman. I just hate the Iceman part. One of our mares has a great name it is Juana Be a Hottie ----- we call her Hottie.

QH names are almost always a combination of names from the top and bottom side of the pedigree that instantly let people know how the horse is bred. To get a good name, you have to have an idea what your fictional horse’s sire and dam’s names are, so really, you need three names;)

I thought of combining Poco Bueno something with something O’Lena or Lena. Then I thought of just making all the names up, going back to Three Bars or thereabouts and just inventing a whole pedigree. But knowing me, I would get so interestedin the name game that I would forget about the story. And this is just one horsey character!

I think I will check out some buckskin QH pedigrees online and hope to get some ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Gotta love the Juan names, you can really have fun with those. My mare is by Terrific Juan, I didn’t breed her so didn’t get to name her and the breeders named her BDB Fashion Design…a little fancy for me, and what a waste of the Juana ;). Some of her siblings names I really enjoy are…

JUAN HOT BABE

JUANNA FOOL AROUND…hmmmmm…ok

CUZ I JUANA …

IJUANABETERRIFIC…

And for your buckskin, how about Bucknekkid

Sadly these are already taken because they really are her siblings names, but one I just thought of that I don’t think is taken…

I KNOW YOU JUANA

Crap, I didn’t read your whole post and just assumed those were suggestions… Oh well, it would have kinda sucked since they aren’t related to Juan Bad Cat or whatever his name is

Juan Bad Dude

Doncha Juana

Juana Be Good

Juana Buck

Dun Juana Buck

At breed shows the show name must be the registered name.

Yes, I was thinking I had read that somewhere. Thanks.

Apparently at our local schooling shows you can use another name for the show name. I know one QH who does combined training here and has a really QH-sounding registered name, but his young owner and her mom gave him a show name based on the barn name he came with and it has no dignity, unlike his registered name.

As a QH convert I just think it is cool to go to a dressage or combined training show and see on the program a name like Doc’s Bar None. (Of course I would probably give him a show name more like Doc’s In Sox or something … )

Hmmm … mavbe I’ve just found my buckskin’s registered name … !

That would have been a perfect name for my gelding!

I do like his registered name though “I CD SPOT”. He tested positive for Tobiano twice, once by animal genetics and once in a study done by Stevenson University…but all the body white he has is that tiny spot on his neck & 4 high whites…of course his call name is Doc, with that much Doc Bar…he’s a Doc …;).

It’s good to know that you can change a quarter horse’s registered name if he hasn’t earned any points. I have a friend who just bought one named Hullabalulu. She changed it to Nip Tuck because she used the money she had set aside for cosmetic surgery to buy it

  I love it! The QH I used to ride had been owned by a plastic surgeon at one time so I really like “Nip Tuck”!

Thanks for the pedigree! I like I CD SPOT. Good name.

He’s got everybody in there! Doc Bar, Three Bars, Poco Bueno, King, Little Joe … I don’t know QH names like I do TB ones, but I certainly recognize those 5. And Traveler … and I assume Doc Olena was the one who started all the “Lena” names? Good to know how they got started; I had wondered. It’s a name I see a lot.

So, technically, Lightning Bar was what would now be called an Appendix?

How about Janus? Little Janus? Does he fit somewhere in QH bloodlines?

We just bought one by Frosty the Goodbar, and they usually try to get either Frosty or Bar in that line’s name. The granddaughters wanted to change his name to “Justin B Bar”. Cooler heads prevailed however, and he remained A Frosty Touch
