Quarter horse show entry fees with 6 judges

This is probably a silly question on my part but AQHA showing is a new thing for me this year. Sent an email to the show secretary and will corner my friend who is an avid Quarter horse show person, but in the mean time, thought I would ask here!

Local QH show coming up, AQHA approved ( I guess that is how you state that. I am used to saying Rated for dressage/jumping). There will be 6 judges. The info states ‘Low maximum entry fee at $100/per judge/per horse’. The premium for classes such halter and showmanship states this: exhibitor will show in front of 3 judges in one ring them immediately proceed to the next ring to show in front of 3 judges.’ Thus I am assuming that the entry fee is $600, yes? And with that you can do all the classes, divisions you qualify for.

Then they list the fee for each class, example: $10/per judge for all Novice classes. So I am guessing that if you were only going to do a few classes then you pay $10 per judge for that class, thus $60 per class ( if your entry fee was going to be under $600 for the show.) Do I have this right?

Yes. You pay whichever is lower. Do take into consideration that if you are paying the by-the-class fee, you also need to include a per judge office fee (of perhaps $5 per judge) and per judge drug fee (of perhaps $5 per judge). That may make your price per class be 20x6. The office and drug fees are usually included in the “all inclusive” fee.

The logic is that people will enter more classes with an all inclusive fee, make the classes larger, make the points higher, draw more people to the show.

If you do well it is great to have 6 judges watching. If you mess up, it really hurts!

thanks! I was initially taken back by the $600 but if you are going for All Around, I could see this. My QH and I would be in the ‘ouch’ category with this show fee! He is off the track, then went unridden for 2 years before I found him thus not quite up to what is expected at QH shows. I may have to pass on this show which makes me a little sad since there are not that many around here ( which I found surprising.) I have dressage or hunter/jumper about every weekend if I wanted to go with my TBs but the QH shows are just once a month. And no schooling type shows either.

Holy Smokes $600 per class? I hope the ribbons are really fancy.

I think, if I am reading it right, you can enter a class for less, but that the max entry fee (say you did 6 or 10 classes) is going to be $600.

I haven’t been in the game in years, but Apps used to do this. The way it worked was you could pay a set fee and enter as many classes as you wished. So that $600 would be to show to all judges in every single class you were eligible for, if that was what you wanted to do. It was a heckuva deal back in the day when horses were versatile and amateurs and/or youth competed in open classes, too. Nowadays, you need a different horse for hunt seat, western, reining, games, showmanship (this might POSSIBLY cross over into halter or another division), trail, etc. etc. etc. You’d want to do the math.

js, many western breed shows give REAL prizes.

Whew, I was on my first cup of coffee, thought it said $600 per class, $600 for the day is better. I used to show AQHA, all we ever got were cheap ribbons, if that, one show they didn’t even bother, it was a time when I won reserve champion and got nothing for all my efforts.

The quarter horse shows are all about points…at least they were when I was showing in them (and APHA, too).
