Question about appetite stimulants for cats

I have an elderly cat with CRF who is currently on 1 4mg tablet cyproheptadine a day. It’s probably the only thing keeping her alive; without it she probably would not eat enough and would be very dehydrated.

Speaking in general terms, how effective is cypro? Is it one of the best? I will speak to my vet of course but wanted to ask here too.

Obviously when she doesn’t want to eat anymore even with an appetite stimulant, then it’s her time.

You could try mirtazapine instead, not sure one is necessarily better tha another.

However, what are her Phos levels? Often high Phos levels directly relate to decreased appetite. If she’s not on a phosphate binder like AlternaGel it may be worth trying

mirtazapine is also a good appetite stimulant. If your kitty is doing well on cypro, might be worth sticking with it.

OK, sounds like cypro is as good as anything. The plan was to keep her on it and see if it was worth trying anything else once the cypro doesn’t work anymore. I’ve asked my vet to send her latest bloodwork.

I have my cat on mirtazipine and LOVE it. It has the advantage of being dosed every other day or twice a week, and I use a transdermal ear gel, so I don’t have to pill her. SO EASY for everyone involved.

cyproheptadine has worked very well for me in the past, when needed. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your replies, and thank you ZuZu for the jingles. She’s had a couple of tough patches the last 2 months.

Cypro has worked very very well for me, helped my old kitty at the end of her life and so greatly improved the quality of her life. I would TOTALLY, ABSOLUTELY ask your vet about Cerenia, an anti nausea drug. I consider that a miracle drug, really helped reduced her nausea so she could eat and just feel better!

What works with my reluctant eater (12ish) is warmed up senior food. Warming strengthens the smell and he eats more rather than just a few bites if it isn’t warmed. Right now, leaving the tins in the truck works wonders, in winter, I nuke the stuff for him and he fends off every other cat except his best buddy.
