Question about cat -- cystitis

I have a neutered male cat, in his mid teens, who had to have surgery for a blocked bladder nearly 2 months ago. No crystals, just debris from cystitis. He got Onsior as an anti-inflammatory. I’m not sure he’s over the cystitis though, or if he ever will be. When I’ve taken him in for rechecks he’s peed a couple of times as I was putting him in the crate. The last time he did that was just last week. Is this a result of chronic cystitis? The surgery? Both? When I asked the vet about this she didn’t know. Last urine check showed no blood or other abnormalities, just on the dilute side. Up until now his kidney function has been normal.

Last night he peed all over the couch so he’s going back in today. He’s on a mostly wet diet. He’s resisting it – he was on a half wet/ half dry diet before the surgery – but I’ve found some food he’ll eat consistently and have started adding Cosequin to it. I don’t know if it will help but it won’t hurt.

Any other advice for dealing with cystitis?

No advice, just sympathy. My boy had pu surgery & is still having out of box issues. He’s been checked & re-checked, no infection or underlying cause. He also pees when I try to get him in the carrier. In my completely unscientific words, I think the surgery made it harder for him to hold it, especially when he’s scared.

Ken how long ago did your cat have surgery?

February - he was good for a couple months & then the out of box episodes started again. I’m embarrassed to say it’s everyday now. The only saving grace is that it’s the same spot in our unfinished basement. If I put a box there, he goes somewhere else. My vet is now suggesting kitty prozac. I regret having the surgery, but I couldn’t have him put to sleep without trying. I do believe something is wrong, but I’m running out of $ & my vet is running out of ideas.

Oh no. :frowning: I’m sorry about your cat.

My cat’s urine is dilute (just below normal range), so the vet thinks he’s going into kidney failure. No post surgery bloodwork yet, but he’ll get that next week.

sorry - it stinks to go through surgery only to end up with kidney failure. :frowning: Hopefully he’s not in pain & you can buy some time.

Atopica can help some cats with chronic cystitis. A bladder ultrasound can provide a lot of information.

I just googled Onsior and I hope that hasn’t affected his kidneys – he’s had 4 three day courses in the last 2 months.
